Cabinet With 2 Faces

Postby Nat Wheatley » Thu, Oct 09 2014, 2:40PM

Our typical closet island configuration consists of 2 cabinets back to back. I'm wondering if there's a way to do this with a single cabinet. We'd need to be able to add drawers/doors to both the front and back of the cabinet, and the cabinet would need to have a 'divider' (parallel with cabinet faces) to separate the font and back sections.

No idea if this is possible, but thought that I'd ask. Thanks.

Hi Nat. What is the combined depth of the cabinets and also are they frameless or framed? I do believe that this can be done however it will require some out of the box thinking to do so. You might have a look at this link. Kerry explained how he makes an Island cabinet with a frame and doors on both sides. This may be just what you need. With some modifications I think it can be done.

Thanks Scott, I just stumbled upon that same post about 5 minutes ago and was just giving this another go...

The cabinets are frameless, combined depth is 32". I've placed the cabinets back to back, deleted the sides of one cabinet, and reduced the width of that cabinet by twice the thickness of the side material. I extended the sides of the other cabinet, toward the rear (to cover first cabinet). I then tried to place drawers in the cabinet with the deleted sides, hoping that the slide hole patterns would appear on the extended sides, but they didn't....

FWIW, I don't need to produce doors, drawer fronts or door fronts with these, just carcass parts with the respective drill pattern.

Sorry Nat but Hardware hole patterns is one of my weakness but you might try to create a hole pattern in a mirrored pattern as the front cabinet. In other words make the pattern go from the back to the front instead of the front to the back. Otherwise you could go to the part editor and make your own holes then constrain.

Thanks Scott, definitely an option. Was hoping to set something up that was fairly easily adjusted (in terms of changing drawer heights etc), but that may not be and option. Same issue appears with adjustable shelf holes too, but I could set those up manually too.

Hi Nat
Here is a cabinet that I was able to put the shelves in the back section. Take a look at the construction settings for the fixed shelves and adjustable shelves. Although you could add a fixed shelf for the drawer on the front as well as an adjustable shelf but they will be offset by the material thickness of the shelves in the back when you set the opening to 0. You could however save the geometry for the shelves then remove them. Then use Kerry’s method as he described it in the link that I posted to get the drawer box and shelves for the back section. From there you could take the ends into part editor and apply the saved geometry. As I said I do not have a lot of experience with hardware holes. So I did not include these. This may not be the ultimate solution for what you are trying to achieve but maybe it will help.

Thanks very much Scott, I think this may work for us. I'm realizing that we could use the shelf holes for our slides also, if needed.

Were you able to select the shelves in the Shelf Editor, once you'd moved them to the rear of the cabinet? I couldn't find a way to work on those.

Yes you can. I found that when in the shelf and partition editor I can make the necessary changes in construction settings then if I click on the back and move the mouse carefully in the general area of the shelf when the curser is on the shelf then the popup will display the shelf details. Then I can left and hit enter to apply the changes. This does take some practice but is possible. Please note that this cabinet was something that I came up with just this morning and I have not done a lot of experimenting with it. Please let me know how it works.

Hi Nat. I was just wandering how this cabinet was coming along. I am curious as to what you come up with. Please keep us informed.

Hi. Working on it, but got a little sidetracked. Will post back once I do have a completed cabinet.

Attached is what I've come up with. I've placed 2 cabinets back to back, reducing the width of the rear cabinet by 2X the thickness of the side material, and deleted it's sides and top (made the bottom a 'do not cut material). I extended these same parts of the front cabinet, to cover the rear cabinet. This setup allows me to place shelves and drawers in both cabinets, but the hole patterns for the rear cabinet aren't being picked up by the sides...

I apologize, the last file I attached I had saved as a cabinet, not an assembly, so only some of the parts were saved. Here is the complete file.
