Design Lock

Post by Jeremy Schiffer »

I'm not exactly sure what this feature does. The Help file doesn't really explain its reason, only basically how to use it, and searching the forum here hasn't answered my question.

I am custom designing a huge library of cabinets for a customer. I'm going to send him the library. He creates layouts/batches with my cabinets, sends me the files, and I cut them.

Here's my question: What's to prevent him from taking weeks worth of my design work and sending my library to another cutting shop? Is this what Design Lock is for?

Thanks!

Jeremy,

That is exactly what this is for. You would want to lock it to only yourself and that way they (the user of your files) can build custom layouts, batch cabinets, but will not be able to create CNC or edit the cabinets/assemblies.

Thanks Scott, that's great news. So, if I create a group and set myself as the only member of that group, then only I will be able to make changes, generate CNC, etc. I don't need to expressly add my customer to any groups?

Jeremy,

Yes, that is correct.

One more question: How can I tell which files or directories are locked and which are not?

Jeremy,

You can see if a file is Design Locked by clicking on the info icon below the cabinet or assembly in the Item Window.

Re: Design Lock

So, I got the library done and locked, and sent to my customer. I would like him to be able to click on the Costs Sheet (or at least the Selling Price) so he knows how much it's going to cost for me to cut the job for him, but the design lock isn't allowing him to do that. I understand the design lock is to prevent unauthorized use of cabinet files, but I don't understand why the costs can't be looked at. Is there any way he can get those costs?

Thanks!

Jeremy,

We will open up the Selling Price option for design locked items in the next version. It of course will require that the end user has all the costing options set the same as your systems if you want it to match.
