No Edge banding on profiled parts?

If I take a stretcher and miter the one edge why can't I edge band the other edge.

Not sure, I am guessing the reason it isn't allowed is the profile would usually get applied to an MDF or solid wood part and that wouldn't normally get edge banded.

Well with the use of more and more melamine and HDF type products it really needs to be addressed.
