Has anyone tried the furniture finishes on MDF? I seem to remember something on this but couldn't find anything.
Thanks,
Grady

Hi Grady,
There is actually a different process that we have for finishing mdf. If you take a completed mdf door, areas of that door will be exposed and not sealed like the outer layer. If you just sprayed that area that has been cut, the exposed wood will suck in the stain leaving you with a bad finish. We have a material called Edge Filler that needs to be used before applying the stain. I have been working on getting some mdf finishes available on the web but getting all of the documentation completed and entered into our database is time consuming. Let me know if you have any more questions on this subject.
thanks,

Grady,
Yes, the entire piece will need to be sprayed, sanded and then a second coat will need to be applied as well. Then depending on the finish that you would like to see will depend on what steps you go from after the edge filler.

Jason,
Any word on when you'll be offering these finishes? Is Edge Filler a product name? Will it be made available through the member store as well?

Re: Thermwood furniture finish on MDF?
Hi Mike,
I have been slowly adding the mdf finishes on our end but there are a lot of steps to get it from formula to product. Also there are a lot of steps from start to finish for an MDF finish. Some steps can be excluded of course depending on the look you are wanting.
Edge Filler is a generic term. I think the actual name is Wood Filler. It is extremely thick but can be sprayed. After the two coats of edge filler, there is generally a basecoat in which the color resembles wood and not MDF. Then there is the enamel (color, stain equivalant), glazes, clear coats, etc...
