Why can't I do this?
I have searched the documentation, but I must be missing something.
I need to do some fine surgery and need to get close.
Zoom and pan in part editor

To zoom, hold down the ctrl key and draw a bounding box with the left mouse button. Hit the 'home' key do zoom back out.
Once you're zoomed in, you can't pan unless you're in 'Review' mode(the eye icon).
