Off topic advice on purchasing Oak timber

Post by Neville Bastian »

Hi Guys,
I hope the moderator of the forum will allow me to ask this question.
I'm going to import a couple of 70's Corvettes, one from Terrace Bay in Ontario then drive to to Rome NY to pick the second one up. While on my way I would like to pick up a couple of thousand dollars of Oak timber to put in the sea container for the trip back to Australia.
I had thought Terrace Bay would have been a good place to buy the timber but on phoning the only cabinetmaker there he says he buys his from Montreal.
Google maps says I should come from Terrace Bay via Sault.Ste.Marie,Ohio,Pennsylvania then New York.
I was hoping if any Ecabinets users know of any lumber wholesalers they recommend I could get their email addresses. Naturally I'm keen not to deviate too much the main route due to time constraints.

I will be also attending the IWF in Atlanta so may catch up with some of you at the Thermwood/Ecabinets stand. I'll be the guy with his mouth wide open not believing what he is seeing.

Regards

Hi Neville,

The hardwood supplier I use is in Lake Ariel PA.

Wm. H. Polley Woodworking & Lumber

Great people to work with! Beautiful Hardwoods! Reasonable Price!

I have been using these guys for about 1 year now after I got sick of being treated like #$@#$ from some of the large hardwood companies who act like they do not care about my business because I only usually buy about 200 bf at a time.

I would much rather give my business to small Mom & Pop type businesses who provide excellent service and material ,and actually value my business.

Here is the link to Polley's website;

Ask for Bill, and tell him that Vince from CCS Woodworks told you about him.

Maybe he can help you out.

How much Bf of Oak you plan on buying anyway ?

Hi Vince,
Thanks for the suppliers name.
I'm not sure how much I'll get as I haven't worked out your board foot costing. I'm used to cubic meters here. The guy in Ontario said it he paid $5.00 a b/f.
If I wanted say 10ft of 2 1/2" by 6" what would that be worth? Do you have to buy a certain quantity?

I was hoping around two thousand Dollars would be my budget. Just looking for a tax break on the car freight really.

Regards

Neville

144 cubic inches is one board foot.

Here's a couple of thoughts...

Will you have problems importing wood products yourself?

Will you have to pay duties/taxes on the wood?

If you have to pay duty, can you "crate" the cars with the wood so it is considered packaging materials rather than imported wood?

Expect to pay about $2.00 per board foot for 4/4 and $3.00 per board ft for 8/4 .Make sure you specify kiln dried 10/4 or 2 1/2 inch will be harder to find. Have your material shrink wrapped so it will stay dry enroute There will be dozens of lumber suppliers at the show pick one that is experienced in exporting lumber near a port if possible
