KD/ RTA Fitting Question

Post by JohnLashuay »

Does anyone know if it is possible to drill only one KD/RTA fitting on a side of a stretcher? I am trying to use a stretcher as a Toe Kick and I would like to have only one fitting on the left and right sides.

Any ideas??

Thanks in advance!

Never mind...I figured it out...I think. I used a neg inset for one of the fittings so only one will be drilled.

Does anyone know if this will cause an error anywhere else??

John,
I've often wondered about this so I just did a test on the machine and everything worked fine with the negative inset, so I'd say you are OK. I'm running the latest Control Nesting. I can't remember if you are sending these jobs out to a production sharing router? Even if you do in the future, it looks like you are OK.

John,

Do post your results if you do end up trying this. I've been trying to figure this one out myself.

Thanks Fred for testing it. As of yet, we do not have a CNC, but we are hoping to bring one in this year. Right now I am trying to make up my libraries to help us get moving faster.

Nat, I'll let you know what I find out as soon as I can run it on my own.

I have done this many times as well with the negative offsets and everything works fine. Another thing you can do if this is a seed cabinet. Manually place your holes in the parts editor and use constrants so that you can resize your cabinet and not have to change your pos. and Neg. offsets everytime. Some cabinets for some reason or another will not place the KD/RTA holes on certain parts so I had to manually start placing them. Not too difficult once you fine tune the depths and diameters.

One thing I forgot to mention. Be carefull with parts that only have one fitting on either end. The part will spin round and round on the pins.

Damon/John,
A year or so ago we were asked to assemble and put together a large office that was nothing but KD furniture from a national brand. Two semi's full of this stuff showed up here. I took a bunch of pictures and kept all the instructions. In a number of cases they would have one Cam on a part and then a wood dowel in the right next to the cam or in the opposite location. The instructions called for the customer to put some glue on the dowel and then do the assembly. I just thought it was interesting. Can't believe there is that much cost savings going with a wood dowel over a metal dowel and cam.

Damon/ Fred,

Thanks for the input! It is good to know that it works and I can go ahead and create my libraries.

I do see the single cam as a potential spinning problem, I am thinking about combining our current setup and the cam setup. The current way is to place shelf pins in the holes and push the TK into place and the carpet holds it. So if I keep one of the holes for a shelf pin and a cam hole then this would take away the spinning problem.

John, with the cabinet you posted, just place a KD fastener on the top of the part going into the deck. Another thing you will want to make sure of, The KD Fastener that is on the deck and overlapping the stretcher, make sure you use FLUSH mount fasteners otherwise you will have a lip to contend with.

John,
I wanted to re-visit this topic. I just did a cabinet with the KD hardware on the kick, but instead offset the side top cam. I gave it a -1" offset up and used the bottom cam as my only cam. The machine drilled the dowel hole for the -1" offset cam in the side panel. It makes sense, I guess we need to watch this and make sure the offset is "off" all parts in the cabinet. This "extra" hole also shows in the eCab nest.

Fred,

Thanks for the heads-up! I noticed this as well when I was creating a cabinet using these constraints. I just have to remember to make sure I place the neg inset on the correct side.
