Arts and crafts

Postby Michael Rice » Sat, Jul 07 2007, 7:23AM

These pics are from a job I did this past spring. The house is still under construction as you can see, but i had to go to there yesterday so I took a few pics. This is an arts and crafts home in the style of Greene and Greene. Another company did the kitchen, I did all the baths, sauna, bars, bookcases, and a variety of millwork. For some of the cabinets i used eCabs just to get my dimensions, layout, and sheet good count. these pics aren't very good but I'll get better ones when the house is clean and finished

Mahogany wet bar. Owner wanted frige and icemaker completely hidden so I made large panel doors to hide the appliances. The space behind the bar is storage so we cut the wall out for good airflow around the appliances.

Very nice. I like it when we get jobs that allow us to put \"our\" influence in.

On the pic of the bar, what kind of top material is used? Pretty cool house, I like the rec room. Is that a soap stone top in rec rm?
We love what we do, we do it well.

The tops are all soapstone, kitchen, baths, bars...everywhere. Owner loves the stuff. It is beautiful in it's natural state, but it is very soft and porus. It sands and cuts about like wood. It's not widely used here in north central Ga. What I don't like about it is that it has to be treated with mineral oil several times a year for a year or so. This turns it black with the white streaks showing through. I don't know if it's treated this way in all cases or not, but that is what this guy is doing.

We had some soap stone tops delivered this week, the job was delayed 6 weeks because the owner is way to fussy. The fabricator told the owner that after several app of min oil it can be sealed which will creat a total different look. I hope he was correct, because I know nothing about the product. As soon as the hood goes in I will snap some pics to share.

This is my first experience with it also. I can tell you for sure that the oil turns it black. My owner bought his backsplash, above his stove, from a guy who did some inlay work in the soapstone. The material they used has already been treated with min oil, for a while, and it is very black. I hope your owner knows how radically different it's gonna look after a few treatments. Plus, the oil makes it greasy....

I stopped by this job today and snapped a couple pics of the treated soapstone. Pics are kinda lously due to the back light but you can get the idea of how different the treated soapstone looks. the backsplash has had a number of treatments ( i don't know how many), but as you can see, it has turned very black. The counter to the left and in front are still in the natural state. As you know, mineral oil doesn't cure, so the treated backsplash has an oily feel to it........personally, I wouldn't have it. Too much maintenance !

Michael Rice,

VERY Nice work! Did YOU do the soapstone? I was looking at soapstone at the 'Vegas show. I like it because it can be machined on my Thermwood Router. Do you know what it sells for (s.f.)? I love the custom drawers too.

Brian

By-the-way, the range is a little small! Hah! I'm sure there's a reason...

Thanks. I didn't do the soapstone. Believe it or not, all the soapstone was done by Home Depot. There's a huge amount of it in this house and they were considerably cheaper. I havn't heard how much it costs, but I'm sure you could mill it. You can cut it with a saw, shape it with a handheld router, and sand it with a palm sander. The space beside the range gets a gas wok. This guy also has a soapstone wood fired pizza and bread oven, not by home depot. It was manufactured somewhere like Sweeden and shipped here and assembled by specialty mason. I have a picture of it somewhere, I'll see i can find it and post it, it's pretty cool.
