Location of Router

Post by Gerry A Brown »

Hello everyone,

We are longtime E cab users and have just purchased a used CS 45 router. I would like to install the router under a mezzanine that has a clearance of 100" . I see the over all height of the machine is about 82" so it will fit alright and the end away from the home location will just protrude from under the mezzanine so loading should not be an issue.
Can anyone see a concern with this plan? Any other advice for a new user would also be appreciated.

TIA
Gerry

Hi Josh,
Yes that has been in the back of my mind with this location. I have not had any experience with the routers so I don't know what the common solution is in regards to having the dust collection hose follow the head without dragging catching etc. All the videos I can find focus on the cutter so not much info to be gleaned there. Any and all advice is welcome.

Thanks
Gerry

You simply have to have a dust hose hung from above that will be sufficient to lengthen and accomodate the router's movement. If you have a moving gantry it's a longer hose, but with a moving table (like mine) you just need enough to accomodate the side-to-side movement of the spindle (the Y axis).

Hi Josh,
It is a moving gantry style so I will need to accommodate both side to side and end to end movement. I guess I will need to wait until it is here to work out the details.

Thanks

Gerry, ihave a 5x10 moving gantry, and I have my main duct tight to the ceiling at 12', then a 90 with a swivel fitting.
I would hate to have less room than that.

Hi Michael,

I would like to have the router under the mezzanine but I think the dust collection might be the show stopper. I think most that I have seen are set up as you describe yours. It would take some fancy footwork to make it work under the mezzanine.

Thanks

Hi Gerry,
I thought I might have a pic, but dont.
If you go to my website under the our shop tab, there is one pic taken back from router that shows the dust collection, those are 12' ceilings there.
I was looking at your post again, and i do beleive you might be asking for trouble under that mezzanine. Its a trick keeping the dust collection hose out of trouble with the moving gantry even with high ceilings.
You cant kink the hoses repeatadly or you will be buying very expensive hoses. I know, my first one lasted days and my second has lasted 3 years!! I also learned my lesson and paid money for the best hose I could find.

Hi Michael,

I think you are right it won't be worth the trouble to locate under the mezzanine. You have a nice bright and clean looking shop.

Thanks

Some days Gerry,some days!!!
I used to have a full time girl to just clean, but with pricing today, it got to be to much, so I had to back off that..

My ceiling is 112" and it is tight, but working. I fastened a sliding door track to the ceiling centered over the table and attached the hose to the trolley. I wish I had about two more feet of height.

Hi David,
That photo gives me some ideas. I do have lots of height when I get out from under the mezzanine. I am thinking of a track that will carry the hose in under the mezzanine with a spring that returns it when the head comes away from the home position???? It might work and the space under the mezzanine is of much less value then the rest of the shop.

Thanks for you input,
Gerry
