Tooling error

Post by Josh Rayburn »

Load job
filter to cut only 1/2" material
nest and write code
tooling error: tool size between .119 and .237 not found
I cannot explain why it would want that size tool
The job contains 1/2" material at .5" and the thickness was changed to .475 when twd'd
50% tenon thickness @ .475 = .2375 + fit clearance @ 0.015 = 0.2525 for the blind dado - this should be cut with the 1/4" tool @ 0.25" diameter, it is set to rout/dado only.
Can someone try this out and see if I'm missing something?
Pertinent files attached
thanks!

if I change the materials in ecabs to the correct thickness materials as follows:
3/4 prefin maple - change to .725 pfm aup
3/4 maple paint grade - change to .735 raw aup
1/2 prefin maple - change to .475 pfm aup
1/4 glass - no change

then nest the job
here is what i get, it should be cuttable with the 1/4" tool @ .25" diameter

Josh,
The way I understand it, ih that you cannot rout a blind dado in one pass, so the cutter diameter is to close to the dado, if rour tool was sharpen and be at 0.237 or under it would cut ok.

Easy fix, increase your tenon at 55%

Dave,
Yep, that's true but I also changed the cutter diameter in tooling setup to .249" which gives more clearance (0.004") and I still got the error.
So the obvious question to TWD is "how much clearance do I need for a blind dado or any 'dado' operation?"
I have run .475 material with 50% tenon thickness many times with no issues....

Josh,

Typically the cutter dia. must be at least .001" lesser than in order to allow selection for cutting dado. However, I noticed when reviewing your files that the error is comming up on a line that is trying to perform a .1262" blind dado. One other thing that I've noticed in your TOOLING setup, is the variance in how tooling is setup. As a rule of thumb, I generally recommend that users setup tooling operations with OP 1 being the largest dia. tool in your tooling setup, then work your way downward setting tools and options that they can be used for. This is how the control nesting software will search for tooling, starts with OP1, falls through until capable bit is found.

Ryan,
I have the 3/8" tool before the 1/2" tool because it is much less expensive so if it can be used, I'd rather that get bit worn down when possible.
Anyhow, it still does not explain why a 0.1262" blind dado is being generated in the first place. Any insight as to what's causing that?

By resizing material to .475 thickness, this requires a tool that is .221 in dia. for machining the blind dado in the RIGHT end part of Fletcher MB. You have to also account for the .015 fit tolerance setting.

As far as the .1262, I this was an error on my part as I was looking through G code. If you have the .221 tool, parts will nest and write cnc.
