Drag Knife

Post by Rob Davis »

Since Shop Bot can do this, can our CS40 do this? Donek Drag Knife to cut veneer. What do we need to do to use this on our machine? New software?
If interested, here is the YouTube video link for how to program it.

Rob,

What they are doing is not directly related to a ShopBot or other machine. It is not even dependent on the Vectic software. The "magic" is being performed by the Excel spreadsheet that was run and that modified the NC file itself.

What I see that is needed on ANY machine would be: a source NC program, that drag-knife and that spreadsheet the gentleman was using*. (*If may be necessary to modify the spreadsheet so that it can modify THM G & M code.)

I believe Thermwood already has sign-related systems that work with knives. Not sure if they are applicable to veneers, etc..

They also have an oscillating knife aggregate, that when mounted on a C-axis can cut paper, cardboard, carpeting, rub sheets, etc... (Veneer may be in there too.) Pretty much all that requires is an Ocsillating knife aggregate, a C-Axis, a minimum of Mastercam Entry and the Oscillating Knife post.

Just my nickel's worth (...since pennies are history here in Canada.)

Thanks, Brad.
On TW On-line Store they have In-Groove insert engraving system in the sign making section. Does this work to do marquetry, inlays, veneers, etc.?

That is a question that you will have to ask the THM staff. Unfortunately, we have not delved into that market up here in Canada yet, so I am not totally up to speed in that area.
