Re-nest specific material

Post by Jeremy Schiffer »

An extraordinarily useful feature for CN would be the ability to re-nest a specific material. If you've got a huge job loaded, it takes a while to nest. When you add sheets, you have to re-nest the entire job. If we had the ability to re-nest just select materials, it would speed up the whole process greatly. Anyone else think this would be helpful?

Not sure exactly but are you referring to the selection filter?

No... what happens (almost every job) is after you nest, you can see what size offfall (of a particular material) would be most efficient to add.

Example: You have a big job with 4 different materials. Nesting it might take anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour or more. After waiting for it to nest, you can see that if you add 1 small piece of one of the material types, it could save an entire sheet. So you add that 1 piece, and you have to re-nest the entire job, even though the other 3 material types won't change at all. If you could just re-nest only the Oak Ply, for instance, it would save a ton of time (and material, since it is often better to just get the job cut rather than spending another hour waiting for the entire thing to re-nest.)

I almost always nest only one material at a time, for this reason. I use the material selection filter shown in the previous post by Ian. On larger jobs the nest for just the cabinet shells can take a few minutes. If I add the drawer-box material to the nest at the same time, then it will take forever.

To save time and be able to dink around with adding the appropriate sized off-fall, I'll nest the cabinet shell material only, tinker until I'm satisfied, and write the CNC file. Then while those parts are cutting, tinker with the nest on the next material. As long as you don't try to write the CNC file while the machine is cutting (just don't hit that button! Wait until you've exited the timer dialog) things will calculate much faster. All our material is purchased by the unit (40 sheets) so I seldom cut more than one material at a time because I've got to stage everything with a forklift.

We've done that before as well, and it does work, but if you label the parts with the colored symbols (as we do) then the whole job has to be done in one nest, otherwise the symbols won't match from nest to nest.
