Bottom of parts chipping

Post by DanFecteau »

Hello, any idea how to avoid that kind of chipping at the bottom of part at the point of entry ? See attach. Tool is a brand new 60-123mw.

I've always used a 3" ramp. I might see a small chip if the part is hanging over the edge of the table, but rarely.

I'd guess that short ramp length is giving you some issues. Lengthen it out like Dave suggests and see what that does for you.

Dan,

I agree that your OUTLINE RAMP-IN LENGTH is too short. It is causing your OUTLINE tool to PLUNGE very steeply (almost vertical) and it is punching through the melamine on the bottom side.

3" or so is normally a good setting for the OUTLINE RAMP-IN LENGTH.

NOTE: It is possible that someone confused the OUTLINE RAMP-IN LENGTH for the OUTLINE PRE-RAMP DEPTH. If you are using a 1/2" compression tool for your OUTLINE, then a OUTLINE PRE-RAMP DEPTH of 0.375" is normally suggested as it insures that the lower upshear part of the cutter is well into the material before the RAMP move starts. This reduces chipping on the top surface during the ramp.
