Info about connecting Thermwood to network

Post by SoulDiallo »

I am working on connecting the thermwood (C67DT, april 06)controller to our computer network.

In order to do so we need to install Trend micro anti virus/firewall software on it. That software recommend having 512 MB with XP to run confortably.

My questions:

Are they possible obstruction to the good operation of the controller.

Do we need to add memory or increase HD size?

If yes, what type of memory and HD shall we use?

What about windows automatic updates?

Are they special windows setting I need to convey to our IT group?

Thanks.

1.) Are they possible obstruction to the good operation of the controller?

If your CNC machine is on the network, especially with internet access,
Thermwood does recommend that AntiVirus software be installed on that
machine. We have tested the control with MacAfee and are not aware of
outcome when installing any other Antivirus, however, there shouldn't be
any issues.

Note:
If the Antivirus program would go into an active hard disk scan while
the CNC machine is cutting, then the control, worst case, would go into
E-Stop.
System scans should be disabled or scheduled to only run when the
machine is in EStop. Other than this, everything seems to play well
with antivirus.

2.) Do we need to add memory or increase HD size?

Actual Hard drive size should be plenty at approx. 80G. As far as RAM, your Thermwood should contain approx. GB RAM, and that should be plenty. However, if your Antivirus program is wanting 512, then adding additional RAM would not hurt. The memory modules that are currently used in the system are DDR (PC3200) 512MB modules (XP581).

3.) If yes, what type of memory and HD shall we use?

Refer to above question.

4.) What about windows automatic updates?

Do Not Perform any Windows update on your controller. The only Updates that should be installed on your Thermwood controller are updates receieved directly from Thermwood. The operating system that is shipped on your controller from factory is what has been tested at Thermwood. Any additional updates from Microsoft itself could affect machine operation in a manner that we are not aware of.
