Help on making tool for a vanity top

Post by George Davidson »

My grandaughter would like me to make her a vanity & mirror.
She picked a picture out of one.
I have never put a edge on any of my top.
Could someone put a edge on it so I can look at it

I keep getting errors when profileing your top, it has something to do with the radius corners. I removed them and it works, also the front corners are slightly different. One of the gurus need to figure out why it wont profile. Joe

My guess is that the corners intersect at too sharp of an angle. I would try making them with a larger radius set further back into the rectangular portion of the top.

Most tops of this shape (known as a fiddle back) don't have really prominent corners. I will make up a sample of what I am talking about and post it.

Here is what I came up with George. This is just a sample of course but you can get an idea of what I meant on the corners.

I started with a 24x36 display panel.

First I put a 4\" fillet on the two front corners.

Then I cut 2.5\"x12\" rectangles on each end and a 2.5\"x16\" rectangle on the front but DID NOT CUT THE RECTANGLES OUT.

Next I went to contour mode and created edges.

On these edges I places 2.5\" raduis fillets on all square corners except the back.

Then I left contour mode and deleted the three rectangles I had placed earlier--DELETE, DO NOT CUT.

Finally I created a part using closed contour then profiled the edge using a partial chain.

On your question about multiple colors on the wood--yes, if you are willing to go to the trouble.

The only way I know to do it is to create two identical parts. Make one the color of the edge and profile it. Make the other the color of the wood and make the thickness very small, like 1/16\" and place it on top of the first piece.

Here is a better view of the overall shape of the sample top.

George,
Here is your top,
I saved it as a display part. You can change the texture any way you like.
