Frameless: stile or no stile?

Post by Gene Davis »

Right up front I'll ask forgiveness. Please excuse the use of Sketchup.

Here is a kitchen I am laying out to resolve cab types and sizes. The sink is centered under a window with 135 degree corners each side. A corner wallcab will be stuffed into each corner, the face runs are about 11 x 18.

Having not done one of these before, I wonder whether it might be good to place a center stile between doors, and use pocketscrews to fix it top and bottom. If we do that, we'll probably have to put the adj shelves in there before fixing the stile in place.

Or, should we just butt the doors, and leave our usual 3mm margin there as in any other paired door situation?

Gene,

In my opinion I would skip the center stile - from the customer's perspective I would imagine having full access to a cabinet like that one would add more value than having the stile fill a tiny gap.

Happy New Year!

Gene,
I dont know your door sizes, but could you leave off the door edge profile and hinge that smaller door off the larger one, something like a corner suzan door?

Mike, I took a close look today at some Blum bifold hinges I had. They are the ones we use for susan doors. I also looked at their specs in the manual.

I don't believe they will work for us in this config.

Here is the model of the cab showing machine-edge doors and a 3mm gap. Swinging open, there will be no interference. We'll prototype before using this, unless you want to, and you can report back.
