I'm upset

Post by Leo Graywacz »

And happy at the same time. I am working on a kitchen and making some adjustments to the heights of the cabinet. I adjusted 4 cabinets and decided to save. The program seemed to be getting slower so I thought it might be prudent. So it goes on saving and an error comes up and says it had a problem with the parasolid information. But then it finished up saving.

From my experience in the past before the new saving method was established I knew what had happened. It had trashed the file and all my work was gone. So I stared at the computer in disgust for a while, afraid to open the file. But I gained my courage and opened it. It opened up and it was like before I did any editing. So I am upset that my editing is gone and I will have to do it again. But very happy that the original file had survived and was intact. Good job guys. :D

This brings me back to what i was saying in the thread relating to the next version of eCabs. PLEASE DONT CREATE NEW FEATURES UNTIL YOUVE FIXED THE EXISTING PROGRAM. My experience with this software is it is probably the most buggy product I have ever worked with and it makes it slow and frustrating. Too often I have to make excuses to clients about not being able to produce the drawings or losing the entire job or not being able to start the program. It has enough fantastic features, loads of potential just make it work properly!!!!!PLEASE.

Funny, this was a happy letter for me. I think the program has progressed in leaps and bounds, especially in version 5.2. It can be frustrating but it is the underlying code that it is written on. It needs to be moved up to a modern code so that small sections of code can be re written instead of large chunks. Before, when the program had a write error you were done. Now, you just lose your current modifications. I thought it was great.

Leo,
This happens with me a lot. The way I do, it very simple, in major changes, I save each simple change; that way, when it crashes there it is I have a very current version.
I have learned that some things that I do have the tendency to crash in my computer, so before I do them, there I save the changes and hope it won't crash.

I think the software is great. It is very powerful and free. :D
If you don't think that this is reliable enough, then you need to look into spending about $2,000.00 for a similar program like 2020.

Thanks!!!

I think the rework they did to the software that prevents the trashing of the main file is great. The software is fine for my purpose. Even if I spend $2000 on a different software I would still have little pet peeve complaints.

I'm only happy when I complain

We are all on the same page when it comes to how great the software is but it helps no one trying to be polite and pussy footing around the issues. Faults need to faced up to and fixed.

Nick,

You are wrong. It is beneficial to everyone when we are polite. There is nothing wrong in being persistent in reporting problems and requesting changes but this should always be done in a polite and respectful manner. We are guests on this forum and the use of the software is a free gift. We should be even more grateful that Thermwood is continuing to offer us the use of this software given the current economic outlook.
Thermwood is diligent in their work to improve this software but they have to go about it in the way they find best for everyone. They have always fixed bugs as quickly as possible and add features from their ever growing list when the need, time and resources are available. It is a sad fact of programming though that at times when one problem is fixed another appears or reappears. If you experience one of these problems report it to the programmers using feedback. Provide them with all the steps it took to cause the problem (this can take some of your time) so that they can re-create the problem. If they can re-create it they can fix it. If the problem re-occurs then politely report it again with the steps to re-create.
The reason some problems "Bugs" aren't easily repaired is because they are user specific. They are caused by something a user is doing or by something he has done to his system like move files around in the eCabs folder, un-install and re-install ecabinets, try to run the software on a computer that doesn't meet the minimum requirements of the eCabinet Systems software or trying to run the software using an operating system that is not yet compatible. These problems will also get fixed but since they are user specific and affect fewer people they probably get lower priority. It is rude of us to expect the programmers to stop everything and try to fix a bug that is caused because we want to try to run eCabinets using an operating system that is not currently supported ie Vista or Mac. The new operating systems will be supported in time (OK I don't know about Mac) but until then we should stick with the programmers recommended operating systems. When Vista is supported then we can report Vista problems.
Many times, bugs that are reported aren't bugs. They are simply things that a specific user thinks need to be changed. Just because we don't like the way something works in eCabinets doesn't make it a bug. It is just the way the software works. In this case we can adapt or we can make suggestions via feedback to make a change in the software. We can even go on the forum and debate this issue and try to rally support to get the change made. If in the end we can't make our case to get the change made then we must either either succumb and do it the eCabinets way or find another software that better meets out needs.
Thermwood has provided great support and been a great friend and even when we get frustrated with the software they do deserve common courtesy and respect.

Kerry,

I love your reply. I think everyone of us should have this same attitude, and never taking for granite the gift from Thermwood. I don't care if nothing works in the program... it is free, if we don't like it, we don't have to use it, go out and buy one.
Yes, all the programmers have been very nice and helpful in needing times. We all should respect them for what they do and go through.

Thanks!

I think you are missing my point, being polite is given and once again we all agree that the program is great and has many wonderful features. For those of us who bought a Thermwood it is not free and there are a great many problems with it that have not been resolved release after release, like Rolling Nest where everytime there is a release something is broken that was fine before. So all I am saying is, lets fix it before we make it more complicated and then we will have truly untouchable software. And no, I aint grouchy, just calling it like it is

I agree with you. I,ve paid dearly for this software there is nothing free about it. And there is no harm done telling it like it is. Straight and to the point.

I have to say that I have owned a competitors CNC and I have other software that I have paid dearly for. Time and time again there are issues.
If you have a catalog of cabinets that do not change much then you can get them to work without much problem. However, The investment in their
software and time invested to get it working is incredible.

I have sold off the CNC and now I own a Thermwood and it was not until I got the Thermwood that I looked at Ecabinets.
I was cuting cabinet parts the day the tech set up the machine and they fit good etc.

I can't say enough about how well the whole interface works once you understand it. Is there bugs, Yep, Are there ways around the bugs?
I would say there is but purhaps I have not stumled on all the bugs so to speak. I agree that some of them are computer related and or operator error.
I say this becouse I see them posted here but I have never had those issues.

We say that we pay a lot for the machine. I think that compaired to others on the market, Thermwoods are very affortable and to include software like they have that works as good as it does is outstanding.

Try spending 350K on a machine then 50K on software that takes monthes to be able to work for a few cabinets. You will quickly learn how great Thermwood has it figured out.

All said and done, I think that they do a great job at keeping up with our problems.

My 2 cents,

Gary

I think Nick has a point. It is free software but it won me over for a purchase of a Thermwood. The software does require a few work arounds which is fine but how long do you continue with work arounds? Shouldn't these be addressed in each new version? In many cases they aren't. Some of the features aren't really there such as my favourite MDF doors routing and the drawers. If you are going to release a feature shouldn't it be working well? Also shouldn't feedback of over two years result in that feature kicking butt rather than move onto other neat things like dovetail joints and puzzle joints. Not the real mainstream use in my neck of the woods.
I love what is coming up but Ken have a few programmers focusing on improving past features please.
Some are saying we shouldn't complain about Ecabinets because we have it free. Even though I paid for a Thermwood I still feel guilty on using the software for free. The downside of getting it for free is we have to be polite about its shortfalls. Maybe I should send Ken a cheque so I have the right to complain. :P
The new idea of paying for the beam or panel saw optimiser is a good step. That will lead to more people using Ecabinets and with growth become future Thermwood owners.

I don't think Nick is grumpy. You guys don't know what its like being at the bottom of the world or "Down Under". Pouring a beer is a real mission.
