Does anyone know how to figure out the segments of an arch?

Thanks George,

But what I need is away to figure out the straight line pieces in the arch. I have to tile 3 arches in a bathroom and the trim pieces are 12" long the arch is 30" wide with a 3.5" rise.

Try them in CardBoard first

This formula will give you the radius of a circle for known chord length and rise:

R= (((A/2)^2) + (B^2)) / 2B

Where R = radius, A = Chord Length and B = Arc Height

If my calculations are correct, it will take 4.85 of those tiles for that arc. You might want to consider much shorter tiles (like 4") to get a smoother arc.

Thanks Dan and George,

I am creating the arch so I know the rad. the rise , and the cord. What I need to know is how to figure how long the tiles should be to make as smooth an arch as possible. Dan said 4" how did you get to that figure?

Thanks

Got it, sometimes it takes a while for things to get through this thick skull of mine :wall: . The total lenght of the arch is 32 5/8" divide that by 6 and each piece should be 5 7/16" long now I just have to figure in the grout lines.

Its just a number I tossed out. The smaller the tile, the smoother the curve will be. You method works great when you know the length of the arc and how many segments you want.

Are you going to angle the ends so they will have a uniform grout line or just have a wedge-shaped grout line?

I guess to do it right I have to figure the angle and cut them.
