Comments on New Hardware

Post by Cy Rebarchak »

Hi All,
I designed a new piece of hardware and I am looking for some honest comments on its overall value and usefulness. I received a provisional patent for it so I am sure it is unique. For now I call it “Furring Strip to Beam Clamp”. What it does is aids in the attaching of a standard furring strip to a steel beam allowing it to be “boxed in” and finished. When I was doing contracting work, we would often get jobs to finish basements and 9 out of 10 houses in my area, N.E. Pa., would have a steel beam supporting the 1st floor joists. We would have to box in the beam to cover it with drywall, paneling, etc. by attaching furring strips to the beam by drilling holes for bolts, using powder actuated fasteners or construction adhesive. Those methods didn’t allow much adjustment for square and true. My clamp uses standard off the shelf furring strips and standard drywall screws. It clamps to the beam with a simple hex head bolt, supplied with each clamp, and can be adjusted as needed. The photo below shows a prototype clamp in use. I didn’t show much detail in the picture, but take a look and give me your thoughts. I would like to hear good or bad before I go any farther.
Thanks,
Cy

George,
I see the concept. I never saw those type of push on clamps. What are they called and where do they sell them? They wouldn't really work on a standard support beam in house construction because there is usually a 2 X plate on top of the beam to allow toe nailing the floor joists in place.
