Next Release Question

Post by Josh Rayburn »

So, I was just wondering - is the combination blind dado with 1/8" pilot holes through the center going to be included in the next release?
Just curious

Michael...
We are so close. The technology is in the software, aka rafix fasteners. We CAN set an 1/8" hole for a screw pilot and have it applied to the proper location. We just CANT select them WITH dado joinery. The 2 are mutually exclusive via select one from a drop down list.

I wish for 2 things: 1) That the TWD crew will realize this is a good feature, even tho some users could "shoot themselves in the foot" with it. and 2) that the amount of work to allow these 2 now separate joinery methods to coexist can be accomplished relatively easy.

This would be sooooo much easier than placing and constraining partial depth pilot holes on the reverse side of the sheet as to not conflict with BL dado cuts. This operation was made possible by using the "FlipOpsFIrst" for the drilling (and other reverse side machining). It was not even considered using the individual flip ops feature. Sheet cycle time can be reduced substantially by having these holes drilled "face up"

Gary, I do it without using the flip op first option.
I go in to the part editor and locate a hole and drill it through the dado(ONE AT A TIME). ITs slow and does not follow the shelf, strecher, whatever if you change the cabinet size..

A no brainer really. Bring it on.
I guess the Thermwood programmers say why are they making such a big thing about drilling a hole manually. Well, I have junior workers who can't judge the centre of the groove nor can drill it at 90 degrees in the z axis. Then if you deal with a few self assemblers you have to drill these for them and sometimes forget to do this process.

I could confuse things, about drilling the drawer fronts for drawer front metal fixing brackets for the next release but Dan Epps will tell me off.

Michael...
I tried this in the past, and had not so perfect results. For some reason, the SB Link didnt like the overlapping geometries. This may have been changed in later versions. Add the inability to constrain the holes to the dados.... and you have a recipe... well you know.

Neville...
I was surprised how many shops we cut for in S. FL that wanted the pilot holes. For some reason they had absolutely no confidence that the guys on the floor could locate and install a screw properly.

Pilot holes applied with full dadoes would be very useful to me as well .

Gary,
You're right, the technology is in the software already. I do the same as you with pilot holes as an RTA pattern, and the problem is that holes created by JOINERY functions cannot overlap or else the "outline" of the joinery is affected (i.e. the compin on the blind dado itself that is created as a result)....HOWEVER....a part editor hole properly constrained CAN overlap the dado, even the edge of the dado, without ill effect. This can be done from either side of the part, and does not have to be stopped even with the depth of the dado from the opposite side. This seems to be created as a separate DRILL operation and does not interfere with the blind (or full) dadoes' compin operation that is generated by the post.

So ultimately we're doing it already - we just need a better or automated way to do it. The technology to place holes automatically and space them (like an RTA pattern, i.e. distance from edge, and max space between) properly is there too - so I only wonder, being a simpleton who knows nothing about programming, could it be easily incorporated or modified to give us all what we seek?
It seems by the responses thus far that this would be a very worthwhile feature, hopefully this might convince TWD to take a good look and put it towards the top of the wish list...?
