Solid Wood and Double Stick Tape

Post by Jason Wilson »

Hello,

We Cut a considerable amount of solid wood here in our shop and I wanted get some info from the group in regards to what everyone is using to secure the solid.
Our current method involves using a sheet of plywood and screws, which works well but we are always looking for new and more efficient ways of doing things here.

We are being told that we could use double stick tape to hold the Solid down on the wasteboard but after testing this method the results are not good.

I used a small piece of teak with double stick tape and could basically lift it right off of the wasteboard with no effort at all.
Basically is doesnt stick to the MDF.
I dont really see how this way would withstand the pressure of cutting solid wood.

Is there anyone here that has any input or information regarding this ?

Thank you

Jason, we use double stick from u-line, and it about tears up the waste board when you try to remove it.
I can probably get the part # if you need it..
We use the vacuum and tape,by the way

Yeah, Initially that was what I thought was going to happen but the tape that we have, although it works well in other situations, doesnt stick to the MDF at all.

If it wasnt too much trouble to pass along the part # that would be great, or if you know the name of it I could probably find it.

Also, So what do you do about the fact that it destroys the wasteboard ?

Thanks

Jason,
We havent ordered it this year,so I dont have a invoice, I have about 40 rolls in stock.
There name and part number is not on it, It is made by shurtape, I dont even think it is in their catolog or hard to find if it is..
Just call them and tell them its their 2" wide double stick tape, its blue..
As far as the waste board, we use a flat stiff scraper type tool to seperate it, then we always have to resurface before going back to sheet goods.

Hello,
I went to the Uline web site, they do have quite a few kinds of Double Sided Tape though.

It will take some sifting to find the right one.

I will post back the item info when I locate it.

Thanks again

Not all DS tape is equal I use Tesa brand tape. I think it is the very best. If you tape is too thin it does not hold solid wood very well .
On another note I never use double stick tape any more.
I have been buying 1/16 x 1/4 foam tape from All Star adhesive.
It only has adhesive on one side. I stick that side to the Hardwood and let the other side form a vacuum seal to my spoil board and then I test it. If I can break the vacuum loose by pulling on it I will use a thicker tape

another trick I use to cut multiple parts from a single board is to thickness my stock to 13/16", apply foam to the spoil board to hold my stock in place ,(that way I don't have to apply tape to every board ) outline my parts to Zp75, then send the board through the thickness planer and plane to .75

We use hot glue it works well on short stock. If you are fast enough it will work on long stock allso. You could try a slow set glue to give you more time.
Most of the time we use a scrap melamine against the part and apply enough coller around the part to not cut the mel. Then block off the table with scrap lam. Most of the time this works without the need to glue as long as the material is flat and not too small.
