Question on Corner Cabinets

Post by Nat Wheatley »

I should know this by now, but don't. Why is it that when you take a standard corner cabinet, change the front to angled, that the depth of the sides increase by the material thickness? I had thought I remembered it had something to do with adding material so that the front edges could be trimmed at an angle, but can't figure out, or remember the logic to it. I would have thought that if that were the reason, that the depth of the sides would be be adjusted manually, not by default, as it seems this need would be the exception, not the rule. Maybe I'm missing it completely.

That is correct. The short side after cutting the bevel will equal the depth of the cabinet.

Nat,

You've got it right. The depth of the ends grow to allow for a miter.

We all hope it gets changed to a manual adjustment. By default the sides should be whatever depth you make the cabinet.
I spoke with Scott about this a few months back so they are aware of it, but maybe we need a few more squeaky wheels. :D

Thanks guys, count me in as a squeaky wheel.

I don't use this cabinet often, and each time I do I forget that it adds the depth to the sides. I only caught it by chance yesterday, just before I sent the file to the machine, while I was checking something else.

It doesn't make sense that the default setting is to add depth to the end, particularly on a frameless cabinet, which I don't think would ever be trimmed? I see that it also adds the material thickness to the setback for the front row adjustable shelf holes, which also doesn't really make sense, because even if the sides were trimmed, it wouldn't change the location of these holes??

Count me in as well. I usually forget to account for this and realize it too late. :wall:
