Anyone successful getting eCabs to run under Linux with an emulator?

Hi Mike, just noticed this thread and thought I'd jump in, since I use Linux exclusively...except for eCabs. I tried a few years ago, using WINE, and at that point WINE was still pre-version 1 and didn't have the necessary APIs. WINE would be, by far, the best way to run eCabs on Linux. Since it isn't an emulator, you don't have the additional overhead that emulators add. I haven't tried lately, but I'd like to. I just checked, and see that WINE is up to V1.4, might be worth a shot. I wouldn't get my hopes up, though...

It would, but it would probably be horribly slow. Since you need a full licensed copy of Windows to run a VM, in essence all you are doing is slowing the computer down by running an additional operating system (Linux) along with Windows and eCabs. Not much point in doing that! WINE would be the way to go, if it ever evolves far enough...

Hmmm, maybe if you had a good enough system though, and installed xp and stripped it down to the basics it wouldn't be such a resource hog? Ecabs can only use 2gb ram and a single core anyway right? I think the advantage would be a more secure system overall and easier backups/restore in case of a crash, I guess you could always use something like Acronis instead though.

eCabs is limited to 2 GB of memory because the 32 bit OS is limited to that amount. 64 bit is upon us, the hardware and operating systems are 64 bit, and there are a lot of applications going through the growing pains of switching to 64 bit. It's a major rewrite of a lot of the code, not a small undertaking.

If I get some time this evening, I'll try installing eCabs using WINE. Apparently Sketchup works (more or less) with the latest WINE, so there may be some hope.

I am running Diablo 3 and Warcraft on Linux Mint and Wine 1.5.10 so my bet is eCab will run as well. Might try it myself as well.
