Dovetail Bit Sharpening

Post by Zach Froble »

Do you guys get your dovetail bits sharpened or do you just replace them when they get dull?

Thanks,

Zach

Zach, we use diamond dovetail bit and it takes forever to get dull. We cut our dovetail drawer boxes out of 1/2" Russian birch. When it gets dull I just send it for rebuild(re-tipping). I think I send it back once a year or something like that. All our drawer boxes are dovetail and we cut a ton of them. Works really good for us.

Where do you get the diamond bit? I also use a 1/2" Birch. If it isn't a Thermwood bit do you have to make any major adjustments to your ecab and control nesting settings?

Thanks,

Brad,

the first one probably was. I remember Bob brought it over.

If CNC Automation has it then probably you can get from them or Thermwood. Royce Ayr makes them in Canada. I think Onsrud makes them in the States but make sure you get the right one because they have two types. Rebuilding it costs me $135 I think so I don't waste time adjusting resharpened tools.
