Newport Block Front Chest

Post by Kerry Fullington »

This Block Front Chest is a project I have wanted to try for quite a while. It is by no means a reproduction as I have taken liberties to have it cut on a CS-43. My only restriction to myself was that the entire piece be drawn in eCabinets as a testament to the abilities of the software. I still have some joinery and details to add but I am getting close.
My design info and dimensions came from the book "Making Furniture Masterpieces" by Franklin Gottshall who worked as a designer in Wallace Nutting's factory for a while building reproductions. Inspiration came from Doucett and Wolfe
I have one more weekend detailing then I plan to cut a prototype from MDF. There will be a small amount of hand work but I hope to let the Thermwood do most of the work.

I had to put this project on the back burner again.

I was playing with the sliding dovetail but I never got it implemented. The Feet were another part I didn't have the machining down for but most of the other parts are ready to go. I was able to do the dovetails on the drawer boxes but would have to hand cut the mating parts on the drawer fronts.

My prototype parts that I show got some melamine stacked on them in the shop which broke all the drawer fronts so it ended up in the dumpster.

Some day I will get fired up about it again.
