Back of Lazy Susan lower

Post by Leo Graywacz »

At one time I remember being able to change the material individually for those backs. Normally in my construction I use 1/2" backs for the side backs and the angle back I would use 3/4" material and that would go to the floor as the third leg. There use to be a way to change it out, I remember it being called the center back. Now I can't figure out how to do that. Doesn't seem to be able to be done in the Adj Features area.

OK, found it. You have to do it from the room editor area.

Interesting.

TWD guys, why isn't this part of the cabinet editing features? I would LOVE to have this capability to put a center back to be a 'third' leg on my corner base cabinets. Would make it much easier to work with the cabinets when building them.

Leo, how do you make the change you are talking about in the room layout editor? I can't find it on the menu or context menu.

Thanks!

Open a job up that has a Lazy Sue Cabinet or bring one into the room editor. In the room editor highlight the lazy Sue cabinet.

Right click your mouse and choose Change Materials. A dialog panel comes up.

Uncheck the box on the parts tree so it shows an "X". Open the parts tree up by pressing the "+" sign

Put a check mark in the CENTER BACK. The material it is made from shows up in the lower column. Highlight the material by clicking on it and then a picture of the material will show up in the left window above it.

Choose SELECT NEW MATERIALl from the right window next to it. Your Materials listing should show up. Click on the material you wish to exchange it for. Click on OK.

Click Apply and in a few seconds it should show the new material in the tree above.

There are some things that need to be done in the cabinet editor now. So press OK and that brings you back to the room editor. Press the edit button to get the lazy Sue into the cabinet editor.

Click on the Construction Settings icon and then click on corner settings, then check the box MITER CENTER BACK.

Go back to the by pressing OK. Then flip the cabinet so you have access to the backs. Click on either the right or left back to highlight it and then bring it into the parts editor. Use a rectangular geometric shape to remove the bottom of the right/left back so the back will no longer touch the floor. I bring mine up to the bottom of the deck. Do the same for the other back.

Couple of notes.

I find that you need to use either no top or a full top. If you use the stretchers it will make the bottom funky and it won't reach for whatever reason. Some glitch that happens because the 3/4 and the 1/2" backs want to miter on the outside of the plywood. Personally I use a full top that I cut a bunch out of. Makes for handles so you can move it around and leaves a center area to attach the turntable hardware to.

Sweet Leo!!! Thanks a million.

This would be a nice feature to put into the cabinet editor for a corner cabinet. Some options that enable us to make the center part longer without all the steps you've had to go through to get it done. Seems like a very usable feature, at least in my humble opinion....

I am having nothing but trouble with the different back thicknesses. The program is based off the center back being the material of the backs. So it treats the other two backs as if they were 3/4" thick. It keeps leaving a 1/4" space between the back and the deck. It also miters the outside corner. I thought the outside corner was what was dictating the space, but I'm pretty sure it's because the backs are treated as all the same by the program dictated by the center back.

I don't see a way around this without the program being adjusted so it sees the center and side backs as different pcs. I've been doing this all day :wall: :wall: :fire: because sometimes it treats them as separates and other the same thickness. When you add or remove the top it recalculate and readjusts as if all the backs are 3/4"

Thought it would work, but I don't thinks so.

Wow, lots of weird interactions going on. When you add the top the bottom changes size by getting smaller by 1/4". After you put the top on the 2 side backs develop a leg that is in the dado slot for the back. I've deleted it several times and it comes back, not sure when. I've cut the whole back short by 5 1/4" so it lines up with the bottom of the deck. I do this with a geometry cut. I've done it in the contour area but it requires several more steps and yields the same result.

You can gain the missing deck by putting a -1/4" inset in the construction settings DECK>BACK INSET but that yield different results. Sometimes it puts a 1/4" on it and other times it adds 1/2". I guess it's not always looking at the center back. Then if you put the inset back to zero sometimes it resets and is correct, other times it just goes back to being to short. I don't mind if the deck reaches the 1/2" backs and goes into the 3/4" center back by 1/4" because I dado that and it is correct for my build. But it's just so inconsistent. Sometimes it works other times it doesn't.

I built 2 mirror image lazy sues and they act different even though I built them from the same seed.
