Partitions with 100% dado

Post by Jeremy Schiffer »

It looks like something is not accounting for the radius of the bit. As you can see from the picture, the tenon is exactly the same length as the mortise. This also happened on a job that had 98% thickness tenons. I've attached a cabinet, in case it is necessary.

Many thanks!

Jeremy

Do you know it the "DADO" was actually dadoed? Or was it pocketed? Do you have a tool/operation defined as a ROUT/DADO that has a diameter that is at least 50% the (material thickness + your dado width tolerance)?

Thermwood has recently added to Control Nesting the ability to Control Nesting to pocket machine a "DADO" for which it cannot find an appropriate "dado" tool to do the one-loop dado operation.

If this is the case, then perhaps the pocket operation is staying within the "dado" boundary as opposed to how the real DADO operation automatically extends past the ends.

Just a thought...

Addendum: We just found out the same thing is happening on fixed shelves as well.

Brad, yes, being 100% thickness, these are treated as pockets. I believe you're correct, it is acting like a pocket and staying within the boundary, instead of accounting for the tool radius and adjusting accordingly, such as normal dado operations do.

Gentlemen,

Ok, this is a metric only issue. We have discovered that the dado extension values are being applied, but are getting converted incorrectly when in metric (this is only for dados that get machined via pocketing). In your case Jeremy it is only extending by about .74mm when it should be about 18.8mm. We will get this resolved as soon as we can. Thanks for the post.
