Carvings

You all have been a great help and my design is coming along quite nicely.

Next question: I have 3ds files of carvings I modelled in Rhino as surfaces. Can I bring these into eCabinets somehow and have them cut on the CNC?

By the way. I am a very experienced 3D modeller in Rhino3D, so I'd be happy to exchange services (for one on one instruction in ecabinets and cabinet design) if you need the services of a skilled modeller.

You will not be able to import the 3ds files. They will need to be converted into stl files and then import them into eCabinets.

You can download AccuTrans 3D and convert 3ds to stl.

Thanks. I'm downloading it now.

So once I convert them into stl files, I can get them into eCabinets. Having a production sharing partner cut them should be possible then?

Hey Tillman,
Not so easy, just because you get something into e-cabs for display does not mean we can cut it. If you use something out of the carving library, moldings, or whatever, we can get the code and cut it. Other items could be quite complicated espescialy when it comes to carvings and decorative mouldings.

If I can re-create them in parts designer, will it work then?

Maybe what I should do it bring one in and get it to a production sharer for evaluation?

Got a snapshot of the part you are wanting to cut? This may give us all a better idea of what you are attempting.

How does the rental system work. I see a per-cycle charge. Is a cycle one instance of the carving?

Are the carvings scalable?

Tillman, yes there is a charge per use, this one happens to be $1.00 but the are free to use in your designs. Yes the are scalable. You can check them out in the member store.

Okay....

Suppose I am in the market to do my own designs (for carvings)...and I want to buy some software.....

What does thermwood recomend for easy execution through ecabs?

The real reson is I am saving my pennies and will be hopefully adding this to my repertoire....

I may be wrong, but I think ArtCam Pro is what you want for creating designs like this to use in eCabinets. There is some information on the Thermwood Home page for Software Products (toward the bottom od the menu on the left side of the screen).

Thank you. I have a lot of designs already laid out as surfaces in Rhino, so if I can find a way to use them, that would be wonderful.

Have you tried converting the 3ds to stl using AccuTrans yet? I would give that a try before buying expensive software and spending the time required to learn to use it.

You can convert a few files and send them to your production sharing partner to see whether they will in fact machine. Just using another piece of software to create the same design will not make it machinable.
