What Would You Like to See in Design Sharing?

I am new to ecabs and just started tinkering with a library. We mainly do cabinet doors at our shop, we are working our way to cutting out cabinets for our cabinet makers, but it is a slow process. I have limited time with ecabs and only have a couple of pieces. I plan on sharing my designs in the future, I just want to be more proficient with ecabs first.

When I first started learning the program, I purchased a design library from Kerry and I found it very helpful in getting started. Creating a design library has been a point of interest to me, but as many have mentioned, TIME is a key factor as to why I haven't gone any further. The other, and maybe more important is all the details involved in the process. Kerry mentioned that "submitting a design or library is painless." and he went on to briefly describe the process.

I guess, what I am looking for is the criteria needed for each library? We don't use a cnc machine so I haven't looked into that part of the program. Having said that, will I still be able to share a cabinet library??

That is the point of Design sharing. Your library using conventional machinery and construction techniques may be just what another member is looking for. Having a variety of libraries to pick from allows a new member to find joinery methods, etc. that are close to his own which cuts down how much work it takes to get a particular library working for them. There are no set parameters for a library.

So, if i understood the question correctly, i could just sit in front of machine and build all kinds of design for all kinds of tastes and not have to go to the shop anymore!
I will look at this closer since i think it could be a good source of creativity!

I have wanted to look into this since you first told me about it back when I was looking for a 3D design program. This has become a great asset to our company, and now if I take the time and effort, this is a another direction that could also prove beneficial. Maybe many of us need reasurring and encouragement that design sharing is in our best interest to try to get involved in it, ...if it is at all possible (time-wise).

Design sharing is making more and more sense. You make a very great point regarding the time it take to make the necessary libraries, and in turn sharing them should end up paying for your time.

I have created a pretty extensive library for different cabinets that we use so I will try to put something together and see how it work out.

I hope I am reading this correctly, Kerry (and everyone else).

Would this also apply to construction using all solid hardwoods, too? In other words, everything?

The reason I ask: Two clients (attorneys - partners) asked me to design and build some office furniture for them, using all quarter-sawn white oak. I am getting close to finishing the design work. Would this also qualify for design sharing, using MY tools, in MY shop? Unisaw, large band saw, router table, 8-inch jointer, etc., etc.

I will build and finish everything in my shop (I hope...), if my back holds up while lifting/moving the assembled white oak furniture.

What you are trying to do would apply to design sharring as long as you build the product and specify how it was built and other specs required for someone to purchase and build your product.

I have designed all the office furniture using eCabinet Systems. As a result, the cut lists, etc., will be a part of this.

This thread is about a year old and I was wondering how the program has done since then.
It would be interesting to know how many members belong to the forum, how many have purchased a library, what is the best selling library, how many new libraries have been added ?
I don't know a whole lot about building custom high end cabinets as my business is commercial but I do know that if you want to sell something you have to market it. Build a better mousetrap and the world will ignore you unless you create a need for it.
You could help the cause if you posted the number of sales every month. If people see a market for a product they tend to jump on the bandwagon.
Try giving a Gold Star to the best design every now and then. Maybe buy a single item design from those posted and offer it free to the group.
Thats enough rambling for now.

Please someone explain tthe difference between "Design Sharing" and "Furniture Network" ?
Next question - If I were to take Kerry's hutch (Kerry - PLEASE upload it - I for one will buy it in a heartbeat to use as a seed!) and modify it into a different form or construction method, could I list it as a new/separate/different design ? Kerry gets paid for the original, and I (hopefully) get paid for the "evolution". ???

You said this is a design you have used as a base for several customer designs. THAT is just what I see eCab designs as best
for; seed designs to be modified for each individual client's needs. If the parts are not all available thru Thremwood, so what ? If enough users are interested then those will be added to the network or Thermwood will provide a tool program for it and we can get it made by a Thermwood fabricator.
I am a solo remodeler/woodworker/wannabee and a CNC machine (or the place to put it) is still out of my league right now, but if I had a few contracts like that, I would certainly be thinking about finding a Thermwood-CNC fabricator or maybe even buying a router !
The more designs we all have comfortably in our "inventory" to show clients, the more business we will capture. And everybody profits.

Hi Joe,

Design Sharing is eCabinet members adding a library or libraries of cabinets, closets, furniture, etc... that other members can purchase and download to use for their own purpose. We came up with this for the first time users. Knowing that other members are having a hard time learning the software, having the ability to purchase a library allready made should make desinging layouts easier. You can purchase Kerry's design and change the construction but this is to be used by you and not to sell again. This is becasue each library is tagged to the maker. The furniture network is really the same thing as design sharing except those furniture pieces were designed by professional furniture designers. We would then take their drawings and build them in eCabinets giving the members the ability to purchase the eCabinet files and also having the ability to rent carvings from those designs to incorporate into other areas like kitchen cabinets, ent centers, etc...
