part editor doughnut

Post by Michael S Murray »

Hello everyone,
I need a little help in part editor. I need to make a round donut shape part, I start with a display panel of whatever material then draw 2 circles, one larger than the other, this gives me what I need and than I can cut through the center, but am having a brain fart when it comes to removing the outside so as to save the donut shape. Iguess what I need is a 3/4\" thick washer with a outside diameter of 48\" and a inside diameter of 41\", seems so simple, but it is eluding my brain at this time!
help would be appreciated, I must be missing something. I know I could start with a square, use the arc tool to trim corners one at a time and then poke a hole in the center, but seems like I should be able to draw 2 circles, cut through the center, but then I am getting hung up on cleaning up the outside........

Ok, I got it using the fillet tool and the circle tool, but that seems to be a lot less precision than two circles and cutting away everything else, any one know how to do that or a better way? I am not the best in part editor!

Go into the contour mode and draw your circles there, then back to the editor and bring up the right click menu, chose cut through using closed contour and highlight the center circle, click next and the part should be cut out. Then go to the right click menu again and choose make part using closed contour and highlight the outer circle, click next and you should now have your donut. Would you like powdered or glazed?

Mike, take your square to the contour area, draw both inner and outer circles, exit the countour area, create part using closed contour then cut the inner pocket using the closed contour. Hope that helps

Ok, got what I want in the contour mode, but when I go back in to the editor, the circles I created do not show up on part? I actually got the first question of this post whipped. I have moved on to another similar task. I need to make a circular corian top. the outside r. is 177.5\" and the inside is 146.5 inches. I created a material with the outside dimension of 360\" square.Took this in to part editor, in to countour mode and drew my circles, but when I return to the editor, those circles do not show up? I was hoping to create this washer/donut shaped part and then segment it up until I had a even number of parts, say 16 or so that I could cut on the router and then glue up....

Any one got any ideas????

You're right. The contour lines aren't showing up in my try either. Looks like you may have uncovered a bug. Let me try a few things.

OK, I got it to work. Make your 360\" square and bring it into the parts editor. Using the geometry circle make your circle using 180,180 for the center and 293 for the diameter. Change to the pointer and highlight the geometry and right click on the mouse and choose cut pocket using geometry. Now you have a square with a hole. Now go to the contour editor and choose the circle and use 180,180 for the center and 177.5 for the radius. Now return to the editor and the circle is not there. Right click on your mouse and choose make part using closed contour. Click blindly until the highlight shows up (green). Now choose next. It didn't work for me and I chose return and save part editor cuts. I went back to the editor with my circle and hole and chose make part using closed contour and blindly clicked until it highlighted and chose next and it worked. I had my donut. You should be able to make your segments using closed geometry rectangles.

Here is a 125\" segment of a donut. You can use this if you want or cut it in half again to make it work on a 4x8 sheet

Hey Mike,

That's a mighty big donut. I'd recommend two glasses of milk (minimum).

It must be a build 3 bug. I haven't updated yet but the lines do show up for me. I know it should't make any difference but see if the lines are on the back of the part.

Michael,

done this in V. 2 without problems. Take the square to contour mode, draw 2 circles, return. Select inner & cut/pocket. outer & create part. Just tried it in V. 3 & it works fine.

I wonder what this will do at the router. It may cut the inside as a large pocket rather than an outline cut. Just a thought.

Brian,

it cut as an outline, leaving a disc.
