Real slow working with DXF file

I'm helping a sign maker friend figure out how to be able to have a sign machined on a CNC. We've started with a pretty simple outline to experiment with and will build from there.

I can get it to pocket but it is REAL SLOW in doing so. Is this normal or is it a product of the software he uses to design?

I have brought this on top of a 11 X 7 display panel in my trial.
