Problem on new laptop

Hello there. I have had ecab on a low end desk top for a bit and it has worked OK. I recently (yesterday) purchased a laptop computer.
Pentium M T2060 (1.60ghz/1m) dual-core
1024 MB DDR2

I loaded ecab on it directly after initial boot up. Loaded fine. But as soon as I run it I have problems. If I try to build a drawer, save a cabinet or do just about anything the comp totally locks up. As in non responsive to everything and I have to shut it off/ cut power. It does not even respond to ctrl-alt-delete. What's really weird is that I cannot even remove the program. Using either windows' or ecabs' own removal tool it again terminally locks up. I can't even move the folder into the recycle bin. The only way I could get the program off was to relaod the back up which took about an hour. I then reloaded ecab on the off chance that it was a bad initial install. This time I loaded it using the directions I found on this site, (run as administrator). But exact same problem occurs. Total lock whenever I try to do anything and it can not be uninstalled.

This does not seem to be a noraml Vista problem.

So I am wondering is this a hardware problem? From what I have read this should be enough computer to run this app. It is more comp then I had been running it on.

Is it a SW problem? Is this a Vista issue or do I have a corrupted copy of the ecab program.

I will return the comp and pay the restocking fee if it is the source of the problem though I just don't see that as the likely problem.

Bottom line, has anyone ever seen, heard or experienced anything like this?

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

The right video card is critical in a laptop Ken. Go to eCabinet Systems Home and click on software, there you will find the recommended laptop requirements.

I did consider that but that would not explain the inability to uninstall. I'm just wondering if this might not be a corrupted ecab disk. I am trying to avoid the restocking fee for returning the computer if this is not a hardware issue.

If you have a jump drive (pen drive, USB memory stick,) copy your files from your desktop to the jump drive then to the laptop. If you still have a problem the laptop computer would be more of a suspect than a corrupted cd-rom

To add to Leo's observation. You shouldn't coppy the entire folder, just the backup files. Some files cannot be moved to another machine.

My opinnion is that it is a Vista issue. Not a bad disc. But, first I would make sure the disc was clean and free of dirt or scratches.

I'm having similiar issues with vista on my laptop. I did get it removed but it stuck for an hour before resuming. I've tried to reload in the recomended fashion and am still having problems. At this point I'm going to put XP on the machine.

Has anyone tried Virtual Pc? From what I understand it lets you use both Xp and Vista on the same computer. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/produc ... rview.mspx

I think that you are going to need more power than the laptop will offer. The Video Card is crucial. Also that processor is pretty slow. Remember that Dual Core is not faster........ it just allows for more processing to take place at once if the software can avail the Dual Core technology. Ecabs cannot make use of the dual core technology.

The best analogy I can give you is Two Honda Civics are not faster than one Porche Carrera. Two Civics will carry more people, but only if those people are willing to ride in seperate cars. Ecabs will not run on two processors so the speed is importaint.

And again... the video card is paramount. Look for a used Dell M70 or a M90.

Thanks for the replies.

I did get the ecab sw to function to some degree. I right clicked the shortcut and went to properties. I then went to compatibility, I selected \"Run this program in compatibility mode for win XP\", I also selected run as admin and then checked boxes \"Disable desktop composition\" and \"Disable display scaling\"

I have some problems like the rest of you with cabinets and assemblies I create displaying on top of other items and areas. I generally have to restart the program after saving each new assembly. But it does not terminally lock up.

I hope this may help someone else in the same boat.

I too have recently loaded ecabs to a new laptop with vista and 1.024 gigs.
I had the same problem with the machine locking up. My local computer guy was able to replace the (2) 512 mb cards with (2) 1.024 gig cards. The machine seems to work fine now. \"Vista is a memory hog, requiring about 750mb-950mb depending on the version and how you choose to run it, ie Window's choice or optimal performance choice.\" Keep you posted.

I have had problems with lockups on my HP Pavillion D6000 but not on my Compac Presario 6000 which runs Vista Business. The HP runs Vista Home Premium. The Compaq uses an NVIDEA graphics chip; the HP an Intel graphics accelerator.

I believe the problem is related to the Intel Graphics accelerator on the HP, not to Vista or memory. The compatiblity setting do help and the HP problem is now only found on exiting with an exception = 1 error. I can exit using the Vista task manager and terminating the application.
