Dell M 90
I posted some time back that after all the recommendations by the eCabs boffins I took the plunge and ordered a Dell m90 with a Quadro FX 3500 card. I started the process round about the 11th of July and was then told it would be delivered around the 22n August. Now it has been put back to the 13th Sept. They claim they have a problem with parts. My main objection is the claim of 7 to 10 days delivery on the web page and then just taking as much time as they want. Anyone else had this type of problem or know whats up with Dell? 2 months to deliver a unit is a little shoddy Thermwood almost delivered my CS 40 in the same time! Ok a little longer, but you get my point.

I first had to look up boffin because we don't have a term like that here. I guess it is a compliment (?) to those whose recommendation you took.
I can't remember an order from Dell ever taking more than two weeks before I received it. Of course, Georgia is a bit closer to Texas than is South Africa.
I wonder though if Dell assembles export units somewhere closer to the ship-to country. If this is the case, that might be the reason for the delay. It is quite possible that parts are tied up in customs somewhere.
Either way, I hope you receive the new computer soon. I have been surprised by Dell in the past and received computers as much as a week before the projected delivery date.

Hi Dan. Yup its a compliment to you eCabs experts. Our Dell machines are ordered via the South African web site and assembled in Ireland. I cant even get them to tell me the truth about what part is missing so we can change it and facilitate production. The distance only adds a few days for the flight and customs.

I ordered a Dell Vostro laptop on July 10th and didn't get it until Aug 4th. So I've seen long lead times even of late.
I've heard rumblings from my Dell Account Manager that flat panel displays are in short supply, especially 4X3 models. Can't ship a laptop w/o a display.
BTW, all of the laptops we've ordered in the past year were made in Malaysia.

Nick,
And other interested shoppers, you can buy a new in the box, warrantied, m90 on Ebay from reputable resellers for signifigantly less than what Dell's price is. You get the same service from Dell, the same support and warranty. The Ebay guys have the machines in stock (unless otherwise noted) and they will ship the same day. If you are concerned about scams, make sure that you are buying from someone who has a history of selling these types of machines and has good feedback ratings. I bet you will get better customer service from these resellers during the sales process than from Dell. And again, there is no difference in the support offered from Dell.

The Dell choice of the model name, "Vostro", is interesting.Dean Fehribach wrote:I ordered a Dell Vostro laptop...
I have no idea whether Dell chose the word from the Italian language. In Italian, "Vostro Dell" would translate into "Your Dell"; "Vostro Thermwood router" would translate as "Your Thermwood router".
Interesting choice of name for this model Dell laptop, the Dell Vostro. I do not speak Itailian, by the way - only English and Spanish.

You hit it on the head--Dell purposely chose Vostro because it means \"yours.\"
Read the Dell news release about the product launch.
