cutting stops mid part

Post by Wayland Harman »

While cutting dovetail drawer box's my machine sometimes stops while cutting the male pins. The spindle stays on but wont continue cutting until I press block stop plus and then run. I was running a series of test drawer box's and had this happen several times on one, once or twice on some and not at all on others. The only change I was making was to increase the dovetail bit diameter to tighten up the fit. I am using the standard, slide in drawer bottom, dovetail file. This stopping occurred mostly on the runs that were a very loose fit and went away when the fits were coming out better.
Has anyone else had this issue, and found a reason for this odd pause.
BTW, the drawer boxes are awesome. We had a client come in while I was working on this who was quite impressed. They were not aware that I was at the helm kicking the machine with block step plus to keep it cutting. I was able to get a great fit by adjusting the dovetail tool diameter and did not change any other settings. My final diameter for that tool is .367, though it measures .312 at the narrowest point of the cutting edges. Am I just lucky or is this a common way to adjust the fit of dovetails?

You might be more successful in getting an answer if you post this in the Thermwood forum instead of here.

Would you send me your files for this job? I would like to have your CNC file, the drawer box file, as well as your export file from the control. Once I get all these files I can take a look at test the file out here. Do you know what line of code it stops on? If so please let me know that as well.

When I get into the shop I will send that over. The file I used was the standard dovetail with slide in bottom 1. I made absolutely no changes to any settings in E Cab, just put it into a standard cab and then filtered out all but the drawer box. The line of code it stopped on looked like any other X Y coordinate line, just like the one before it that it ran fine. The regularity of the event diminished as my fit improved. I am using .25 for outline and male routs.
I ran 6 individual box's, entering my dovetail dia. as .312, .32, .33, .375, .36, and finally had it at.367. I was pleased as punch that it all worked and my adjustment method worked also. I just wouldn't want a big sheet of drawer parts coming to a halt every so often. As I said it stopped doing it when the fit was correct. Coincidence or problem solved, I don't know.
Will I have to reset the tool dia. smaller in order to recreate the problem?

Thanks for your help Pete, I tried a 5/8 solid drawer, which came out great.
