Can't get cabinets to align in the overhead view

Post by Stephen Skidmore »

Hi all-
I'm a newbie to this and have figured out a lot on my own, but this one little thing is stumping me.

I've got three cabinets which create a sort of peninsula. But I can't get them to line up without spacing between them or they overlap each other. Some context:
- All three are set for 'Free Style' placement mode
- I'm using SHFT-arrows to move the cabinets around
- I have grid, snap and movement set to 1"
- I've tried with snap turned off and on, same results

Here are the three cabinets...

Here is after moving the top left unit one click to the right. (it overlaps the long unit on the right)

Here is after moving the top unit down one click.

Please tell me I'm staring right at the solution to this problem!!

Thanks,
-Steve

Would you post you job file so I can take a look at it. I would say it has to do with the move increment setting. I would liek to double check first.

Make sure that you have it set to free style, as well as make your move increment .1". Then zoom in and double click on the cabinet. Hole the shift key down and use the arrow keys to move the cabinet or hold the control key down and your mouse to move the cabinet. Both ways worked for me. If you have any trouble let me know.

I set the move increments to 1/32 and zoomed way in. That does it, but it seems like there should be a better way to select to units and say 'align' or something.

What does it mean when the cabinet next to one I'm moving turns red? I'm guessing that I'm overlapping it. But it doesn't happen all the time.

In the Custom Layout View, if you select two cabinets you will see a measurement between the two cabinets. So there will most likely be a distance between, the skew distance, and the length of the hypotenuse, that you don't need. If you set the move increment to the distance between, then select only the cabinet that needs to move and move it by holding the shift key and pressing the arrow key representative of the direction to move. Repeat for the skew distance. The cabinets should be in alignment. On an example that I did here, it was off by the thickness of the door when I aligned a rotated second cabinet to the side of another cabinet. That was easy enough to fix using the same method of setting the move increment to 3/4", the moving it.

Another way to create a setup like this would be to assemble the three cabinets in the cabinet editor, then save the unit as an assembly. The assembly will then install intact and you'll just need to rotate it and move it to position.
