Syntax error

Syntax error

Lost my files, so when I go to eCabinets and open it, then go to the file tab I can see the job I want, but when I move the mouse to click on the file I get Syntax error ( missing operator) in expression.

Does anyone have an idea on whats going on and how I can fix it?

Need more info...

What files did you lose--operating system, eCabinets program, jobs, cabinets?
Can you open any job?

Dan,

Lost the jobs, can open eCab and run a new job ok, it,s when I go to the file tab I can click on everything except the job I was working on when the arrow gets to the job I get the error message

You sorta lost me there...need more details:

How did you lose the jobs?
Did you lose more than one job?
Did your computer crash while you were working on a job?
I can click on everything except the job I was working on when the arrow gets to the job I get the error message
You mean you get the message when you actually click the job to open it and not just when the cursor is hovering over the job, right?
can open eCab and run a new job ok
Can you open any existing job, not a new one or the one you know is bad?

No as soon as I hover the job name I get the error message

yes I can open another job, but not if it is titled in the file tab in eCabinets
I went to program files/eCabinets to see if the job is there and it is not.
I saved this job to the desk top and didn't save it to the clients file.
Do you think if I did a system restore to yesterday it woould come back?

Gary,

I don't know but this sounds like another case of Vista saving your jobs in a place contrary to where eCabinets wants to save them. I am not sure how you would fix it though.

Okay, you are using File History to open the job. Instead of that, browse to where the file is stored and open it (File -> Open).

I agree with Kerry, the file history looks for where YOU told the file to be, but Vista moves it therefore it is not found.

They will be somewhere, I just don't know where to tell you to look.

Use the search feature and enter the name of one of your job files and search all files and folders. Be sure to include hidden files and folders in the search.

Unless you physically deleted them, they should still be there......somewhere.......in that.......grand.......vista of an operating system. :)

Look in C:\Users\<your username>\Desktop for your file (if you saved it to the desktop). If it is not there, just search for the file in C:\Users. If that doesn't find it, try searching "everywhere" on the drive.

You might also try double-clicking on the file on your desktop. Jobs can usually be opened in eCabinets by double-clicking them (without eCabinets running).

Vista implemented something known as the Virtual Store to protect system areas. The Virtual Store will not allow user files to be written in Program Files. Windows file storeage guidelines do not allow user files to be written to system areas such as Program Files. Prior to Vista, this was not enforced by the operating system but with Vista it is. eCabinets does not comply with these guidelines and writes data to Program Files. Make sure you have eCabinets set to run in XP Compatibility Mode and that it is set to Run As Administrator.

Here is a description of the Vista Virtual Store:
The Virtual Store is a feature of User Account Control, the centerpiece of
Vista's enhanced security. Applications that try to write to protected
system locations, including Program Files, Windows, and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
in the registry, are prevented from doing so. Instead, a compatibility
feature kicks in, and these applications write to a location in your home
directory. Registry entries are written to a special area in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER. The application mostly won't know the difference, though
there are limitations and you can get strange results. For example, if an
application deletes a file from the virtual store when a file of the same
name exists in the real location, the delete appears to succeed but the file
still exists. Virtualization also fails (by design) if the application is
run under another user account, or using Run As Administrator. The files
written to the first user's virtual store are invisible to these other
users.

All the cabinets are in ecab titled with the clients name so all I lost was the room layout.I guess some how it got deleted from the desk top and the recycle bin got emptied.

Thanks for all your help. From now on I will save it in two locations. It still confuses me on why ecabinets does not save within it self.

Did you search the hard drive (using Windows search)?

There is no need to save in two locations. Create a Jobs folder in your User directory (C:\Users\<your username>\Jobs) then create the client folders underneath that (C:\Users\<your username>\Jobs\Dans Kitchen).

Never, ever save a file to the desktop. All that is on the desktop should be shortcuts to programs, folders, etc, but never the file itself. The desktop is meant for convenience only and is NOT a permanent storage location.

If you search your hard drive you will most likely find the files underneath C:\Users\<your username>\Desktop but eCabinets thinks they are in C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Desktop (as ALL non-Vista-compatible programs do). Most programs can handle the relocation but eCabinets apparently has path information hard coded inside the program.

I seem to recall a problem where you could save a file with a bogus character in the name but then the software would give you a syntax error when you went to open it. I would bet that the file is probably still there. If you can find the file with Explorer then you can rename it and you should be able to open it.

If the file were not there you would get an "invalid file" error.

This error happened to me yesterday. I named my file and put and apostrophe in the name (Pete's) and got that same error. When I moused over the filename in the recent files list I would get the syntax error and missing operator. I removed the apostrophe and all is better.
