Should this computer configuation work well?

Hi Guys,
I just purchased a new laptop to run Ecabinets on. It is an HP EliteBook 8540W.

The short list is Core i7 620M(2.66GHz) 15.6" 4GB Memory DDR3 1333 320GB HDD 7200rpm DVD Super Multi NVIDIA Quadro FX 880M. The operating system is Windows 7, 32 bit
The first thing I tried when I loaded Ecabinets was run a very large kitchen file that I have had problems running on my old laptop. It ran quite good up until the presentation view. The presentation hangs and shows an "Out of Memory" message then I need escape out of Ecab. I played around with the settings in the Nvidia control panel but no improvement, but honestly, I have no idea what I am doing. I read through most of the forum on NVidia Settings and tried some of the suggestions to no avail. At this point I probably should send it back because it is not much of an improvement over my old machine. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Nick,

Make sure you are running the latest drivers on your graphics card. Even though the computer is new the hardware drivers in it could be outdated. Get the drivers from the HP site for a notebook.

That system should fly, I agree with Kerry, update drivers and software on your entire system.

There have been a few bug's that have caused 'Out of memory' errors, but they have mostly be caught and squashed.

Silly question, are you running the latest version of eCabinets?

In my experience that error rarely indicates a lack of hardware.

I did run the latest version of the Nvidia driver from the HP website. Hp's tech support sent me the link to the driver so I assume that it is the right one. I also have been running Version 6 Build 5 since it came out. I agree that this computer should fly through anything I throw at it. Would running Window at 64 bit instead of 32 bit make a difference? Also I tried every preset in the Nvidia Settings manager and none of them solved the problem. Would upgrading the Ram from 4 -8 G make difference? I didn't think that a graphics card with dedicated memory used RAM.

Nick,

I don't think that upgrading your RAM will help as the 32 bit operating system cannot address more than 4 GB. There were some getting the Out of Memory editor in Beta Testing. I don't remember the cause but I will look on the Beta Forum.

A couple of things to check.

Do you have pulls on the cabinets in this job?
Do you have rope moldings or the Saxony doors that have rope moldings?
Do you have a great deal of Display Objects in the job?

With regard to upgrading your RAM....

As I said, in my experience that error, in conjunction with a system of your spec's, rarely indicates a lack of hardware.

You questioned if you should run Windows at 64-bit, I don't see a benefit to doing that. I could be wrong, so if anyone else knows otherwise........

Pulls could be your problem, as could be display objects.

If you could post your Job file we could take a look at it.

I was told the benefit to 64 bit was processor speed and the ability to address much more RAM which could really be beneficial. When I finally go to Windows 7 it will be the 64 bit.

My machine is as in my signature.

And the only job I've ever had slow it down was that one of yours that had problems with the pulls.

I am looking forward to trying a new system with 64 bit, more RAM and a better graphics card. I have many jobs that I could not finish because the computer quite before I was ready. I would like to do a spectacular drawing before I give it up.

Thanks for all the feedback guys.
I think I am on to something. I ran the event viewer and check all the error messages and I came across this one:
NVIDIA display driver files from different (incompatible) versions of the driver have been detected. NVIDIA OpenGL acceleration is disabled in order to maintain system stability. To resolve this problem, update the NVIDIA display driver. The latest driver is available at http://www.nvidia.com.
I think I am going to wipe the computer and start fresh with a 64 bit configuration. I will get back and let you all know the result.

I did a clean install on Windows 7 64 bit and Ecab is taking any thing I can throw at it.
I'm not so sure it is due to the 64 bit version, athough I'm sure that helps. I believe I had a video driver conflict that I could not resolve. The clean install evidently solved the problem.
