Teach Mode

Post by Rob Davis »

I need some reminders on teach mode. We attended Thermwood trianing but it was several years ago and the textbook (Dennis' Manual) is helpful but my brain isn't making some connection correctly.
I have 9 irregular shapes I want to teach the machine to make. They are traced onto a single pc of plywood and I have made my marks on the outline. I get the G05 and G06 commands for splines and can use the handheld to mark points. My issue is when I go from one spline to the other, do I need to run CAD each time or can I run 9 splines at same time? Can I enter text between the splines to mark them and still keep adding points? If yes, either I am doign ti wrong or the machine doesn't like this as it stops accepting points. I was takign points and going Z-1 and Z+1 at the start and end so I coudl find the splines inthe program. Each one is about 45 points. But it won't take my shapes so I need a refresher.
I know this is a little vague but can anybody help me out here?
Thanks in advance
Rob

Rob,

You can have multiple spline segments in your program and do NOT need to run the CAD PAth option until you've completed entire program. You do need to make sure all beginnings (G05) and endings (G06) are properly marked and that there is at least one line of code or a comment between two consecutive splines (ie: you can use a feed rate value, F100 etc..). Some sub programs and/or macros may need to be commented out (place parentheses around or percent sign at beginning of line ) prior to running the CAD path option, then uncommented prior to running actual part program.

When you say "not taking your points", is the coordinate not appearing on screen when selecting ENTER on HHP, or do the points come up missing once you've run the CAD Path option?

Ryan, not taking points was as I was entering data. It stopped in middle at one point after I entered a line of text (F1 F5) but not sure if I forgot to hit enter or something because it just sat there. Later it worked again so I am thinking operator error on my part. I was trying to enter comments to help me when I review the program find each section. (i.e. - Large arm start)

To clarify, I enter G05 via F1 F5, then start my spline by entering points, then at conclusion of spline, F1 F5 enter G06, then go to Z+1, enter, then to 1" above next spline start, enter, then Z-1, enter, then F1 F5 and G05, then add points, after last point, F1 F5 and enter G06, then Z+1 enter, then to next spline, etc. After all 9 splines are done, then add headers and ending sequence and then CAD. Or should I CAD before adding start and end sequences?

2 specific questions: 1) It is OK to have straight line segments between splines in the same shape - right? Some of my shapes have two perpendicular sides and so I was entering as 2 lines defined by 3 points and then entering G05 and then adding spline points and then G06. OK?
2) Do I have to "close" the shape? The last spline point I am simply getting back to the original start point of shape but not worrying about if I am within 0.001" of original point. There is no issue with not closing a shape is there?

Thanks, Rob

Do not activate the G05 when picking points. Use a pause command (G04F5) to mark the location where the G05 should be but do not activate the G05. Do the same with the G06. Use the pause key on the handheld and enter a pause time of 6 seconds. This eliminates the need to do a manual entry.

To answer your questions: Yes, it is okay to have straight line segments in between two splines. Yo just have to make sure you have the beginning and ending markers of the spline in the correct location. It is also fine to have the chain "open". It does not affect the machine's calculations if the chain is open or closed.
