MDF door profile modeler problem

Post by Forrest Chapman »

This may have been listed already but I want to record it here for everyone's benefit. I have made a custom tool for a mitered door look. The outside left edge of the tool is on 0. If you apply it to an mdf door as an outside edge tool you would expect that it only have to have a plunge applied and not any additional left or right offsets. However this is not the case and for the amount of offset there is no rhyme or reason. My tool is 4.0505" in diameter and the amount of offset required is 1.22". Also although I made this tool with a dxf file and created the x_t. file as well as the tol. file for some reason on a different computer when I try to reload it into shape manager it crashes ecabs. I have not tried to cut this file yet but will later today.

I know most of this has to do with ecabinets but since most of the guys using it are machining it as well I thought it may get a better response here.

Forrest,

I've tried to contact you by phone to discuss this topic.

In order to get rid of additional offsets when machining with custom tool, you will need to design .tol file as a symmetrical tool, with centerline on Y zero, then create necessary geom in contour editor to allow sweep of tool for desired profile on part.

As far as crash scenario, you may try making name of .tol file shorter with no spaces or odd characters (just a suggestion). File worked here also when I created door panel with the tool you provided.

Thanks Ryan, I remembered the possible importance of the centered tool however while trying to do that I had issues with the x_t. file crashing. Maybe it was the length of the name. I was however able to go back to the dxf file and make the changes.
