Shelf/ Partition material issue

Hi guys,

I got into another problem. Now that I know it I will double check and avoid it but it happened once. What do I do and how it happens?

I created a standard upper cabinet for the job. I usually change the material from the global construction settings. In most cases it's good one side material for the carcass. So I do that and apply it. Then while in main I change the shelf/partition material to good two sides and in our case the back material. Everything looks good! I start making cabinets using this standard upper and when I go to Shelf/Partition editor I still click on the construction properties to see what material I am using. It says G2S(Good 2 Sides). So I add shelf/partition and I exit this editor with the idea that the material is right. But not really. Once you put shelf and actually check the shelf/partition it will show you it's G1S. And if you go back to construction settings in the shelf editor you will see that the material for both shelves and partitions changed to G1S. I am attaching the standard upper cabinet.

It's not a problem - I know there's an issue, I will avoid it. Obviously you have to make changes for material and all that from the appropriate editor and you can not make them from the main screen construction settings. I was making all this changes because it saved me time - I don't have to wait for the appropriate editor to load and then go back to the main screen.

If you changed materials for existing shelves without first selecting the shelf, the change applies only to shelves added after the change. If you select the shelf then change materials, the change applies only to that shelf and not any that are added afterwards.

You got me all wrong. I know what you mean but my point in the post is not about that.

Just take my standard cabinet and go to shelf editor and go to construction settings. You will see that the material for shelves is G2S. Exit the property window and add some shelves. Now check the shelf - it says G1S. That's what I don't understand.

Nope...it has no material defined for shelves.

The only material that is shown under the add shelf settings in the construction settings is the 3/4. Is this the correct cabinet? Does this happen with this one cabinet or others? When I added your cabinet the only material it had me add was the 3/4 Abet NG G1S. There was no 3/4 Abet NG G2S. Please double check the cabinet and let me know.

Hmmm, that's really strange. I guess the only way to see where I am getting problems is to follow the steps I take in my first post. I have no idea why it doesn't show material. On mine it shows G2S although obviously it does not use it at all.

Try going through the same steps I took and see if it works for you.

1) I change the material from the globals. Then while in main screen construction properties I change material for partition and shelfs. Then I save the cabinet as a standard one for the project.
2) When I go to shelf/partition editor I double check what material I have and exit. I add a shelf but instead of using the one it was showing it uses the global material.

Try it if you want. Let me know how it goes.

I'm not sure if this has been resolved but here this happens for me also.
Procedure to cause.
Pick a wall cabinet.
remove doors and shelves.
Go to construction settings
Change materials in global settings
Change add adjustable shelves material
add adjustable shelves and equalise
return to main and save.
Try and reload saved unit. error message comes up with wrong thickness for material.

You can't change the thickness of a material in Preferences and save it using the same name. If you open a cabinet that used the material with your original thickness it will give you the error.

If you change thickness of a material in preferences you must give it a new name.

I have not been able to reproduce your problem by your instructions. I still feel that it is being caused by some materials that you have changed thickness settings on in the past.

Maybe the eCab guys can shed light on it.

Changing thickness on an existing material will always come back to haunt you.

I did a test on a seed cabinet and was able to reproduce it 2 out of 4 times, so it is a little erratic.
I have tidied up the process slightly.

Procedure to cause.
Pick seed cabinet frameless upper
Go to construction settings
Change materials in global settings
exit to main
go back to construction settings
Change the add adjustable shelves material
Exit to main
S to enter shelf editor
add an adjustable shelf
return to main
save unit.
Try and reload saved unit.
Error message comes up with wrong thickness for material.

The thing is minor, It just stalled me on my job and I threw out a couple of sets until I worked out what was happening.
I found if you highlight the shelves in the shelf area construction settings and then change the material it seems to save okay.

You must highlight any existing shelves in the Shelf/Partition Editor if you want to change their material. Otherwise only newly added shelves will reflect the material change. the programmers did this on purpose.

Yes. I realise this.
Otherwise all your shelves would change at once restricting your flexibility.
I was indicating that to work around the "anomaly" you can use the above process.

This issue was documented awhile back on the beta site and will be resolved in the next release. The issue may not be immediately evident if someone does your steps with same thickness materials. The short of it is that the adjustable shelf material is getting messed up with the fixed shelf's thickness. So, if you change the cabinet globally using your steps to a 1/2" thick material, then change the adjustable shelf's material to 3/4", you will see that the adj. shelf will add in with the 1/2" thickness. To get around this for now, change both fixed and adjustable shelf materials to the same each time, add your adjustable or fixed shelf, then change both materials again to the same (should you need a shelf with a diff. material.). Hope this makes sense, and sorry for the inconvenience.
