rotate object

When I highlight a part and want to rotate it, shouldn't the curved yellow arrow icon work for this?

Yes if you have it selected it should work. If you click on a part of a cabinet it might not - to know for sure, select the item then right click on the screen, is the "Rotate" faded or is it available ? If it is available then the yellow arrow should work

Rotate is grayed out. Why would that be?

You are trying to rotate something that can't be rotated, like a door or drawer front - if you need to rotate one of these you will have to create it from a display door or drawer front then it will rotate.
