Hi Rick,
If your open to second hand laptop, a online auction place might be good. I recently bought a 2 year old Dell M90 for $500 so was pretty happy about that.
New, well a notebook from Dell or HP is close to $300 but she might have to loose the finger nails.

There is always the smart phone route as they have android operating system which is linux based and will do face book.
