Problem with DXF file

Post by Landon German »

I am currenty trying to put some flutes on a Poplar board. We just got a Model 53 and this is my first attempt at cutting something with the machine. When i go to load the DXF file into the control nesting program i get an error that says warning cannot nest part and gives the name of the part, length, width, and thickness. I do not know if it is a problem with my drawing or the settings on the control nesting. My boards are already to size so i just simply want to put the 3/4" flutes in the board. I thought i would just have to use the centerline layer and thats it but i might be wrong. I attached the DXF file i am trying to get to work. If anyone can help me out i would appreciate it.
Thanks

There are 2 different things going on here. Your part in the dxf file is 96" long. If your material is the same dimension, it will error out because it wants to trim all 4 sides when it cuts the outline, even if the outline is turned off. Ideally, you would need to tell it that your material is 97". The second issue I found was that the four lines creating the outline were actually on the 0 layer, not the outline layer. Hope this helps.

Thanks that helped... I think i found what the main problem is. We have a 5'x12' table and in the Control Nest Settings it shows the table parameters being 48"x 96". If i go to change this to the size of the actual table and hit ok a message pops and says "You do not have a rout tool set-up for the tool diameter specified in pocketing" . In the pocket tool setup it shows dia .5" step % 95 clean up amout .05" and Pocket Area 16"^2. So im not sure what to do beacause i dont know where to place the part on the table. When it is nested it shows it at the far left end of the table, but if i run the progam it starts cutting the part at a different area on the table. Not sure what to do as i am just learning to operate the machine.

Landon,

Have you had any formal training by a Thermwood Representative to cover such things as tooling setup, fixture offsets, Daylight, etc....?

No i havent, the individual who we bought the machine from came up for a day to go over the basics of the machine but we never got to cut any parts. So i have been trying to watch some of your training videos and read the manuals to learn.

I would suggest that you contact Thermwood to arrange some sort of training to help you get familier with the machine control and it's setup. Tooling setup and fixture offsets are one of the topics along with various other topics that are covered in the training sessions offered. Thermwood offers training at it's production facility as well as on-site. For safety of the operator/programmer as well as in order to prevent major damage to the control/machine, I would recommend this.
