Synchronizing files between computers

There have been numerous posts asking how to best keep files synchronized between multiple computers.

Microsoft has a tool called SyncToy that makes this task extremely easy.

You can use it to easily synchronize files between your hard drive and a USB thumb drive, external hard drive, floppy disk, etc.

It was originally created to manage images (jpg, gif, etc) for photographers but now recognizes any file type.

There are five modes of operation: synchronize, echo, subscribe, contribute and combine.

Synchronize copies files (new, changed, renamed, deleted) in both directions.

Echo works the same as synchronize but source to target only.

Subscribe copies updated files from the target to the source.

Contribute copies new, updated and renamed files from source to target--no deletions are replicated.

Combine copies new and updated files in both directions but does not replicate renamed or deleted files.

I hope this tool helps make file synchronization a little easier for everyone.
