Model 42 vacuum pipe collapse
We are running a dual table model 42 and today that parts started slipping on the table. After some inspection we noticed both table vacuum hoses collapsed up at the top where they attach to the rigid. I'd imagine it has something to do with the heat as it is about 95 degrees in the shop in the afternoons. Any ideas how to correct/repair? These hoses are approximately 8 months old.
Thank you,
Fred

Hi Fred, can I get a picture of the entire rear section of the machine? I would like to see the entire hose assembly. You can email me at carl.jones@thermwood.com Thanks

Hey Fred,
I have a C42 also with twin 5x5's and twin heads. My first thought is what is the length of your hose? If there is any tension on it when your table is at it full extent combined with the heat I think would do it. post your picture here and measure the length of the hose. I have had my C40 since 2002 and my C42 since November 2005 and it is also a 2002 model. I have never had a hose collapse like yours and our shops get up to 95-98 in July and August also. I don't think the 98% humidity helps us here. The only hose that has collapsed was a feed from our main 3\" pipe. I have a 5 hp and a 20 HP vac. I use the fire hose type connections to switch pumps according to what we need, dedicated or universal flow through. Some on left the hose on the floor and a fork lift barely touched it but enough I guess to disturb it. It collapsed and we taped wooden blocks around it and it has worked for several years.
Hope we can help,

Michael, Thank you for the information and reply. The hoses that collapsed are 13' long. I just bought 14' hoses 4\" I.D., because as you stated there seemed to be some tension when at full extent. Carl has been very responsive and working on this with me. As you should be able to see from the pics the upper portions of the rigid are angled several degrees up and I'm wondering if they should not be horizontal?
Thanks for your help,
Fred

Hey Fred,
Both of Mine are different than yours. As you can see it has a 90 elbow on it and has very little stress either way. Here are pics of both my C42 twin 5x5 tables and my C40 single 5x8 table. I do not know if the size of the table makes a difference but since both of my CNC's were built in 2002 that may have been the way it made. I know mine are not 14 feet long. Maybe 8-10. (I will measure when I have some time and edit this then.) I think mine are only 3\" ID. You may also want to look at the quick connect hose fittings.
What year is yours? What size table? How do you like the tool changer on the back of the one? Mine has twin heads with twin drill heads also but no ATC. I just left a message for Jeff to see what it would take to add one to mine. 3-5 for each head would be fantastic since 5x5 material is getting scarce and I can get 5x10 pretty easy but will probably need the ATC to be more efficient and take a load off of the C42.
I agree, Carl has been very helpful for me as well.
As you can see in picture 517, one table is at home and the other is extended back to about 55\". No stress on hose.
Picture 515 shows more of the hose on the almost fully extended table.

Hey Fred,
Here is the one from the C40. I guess the forum only allows 3 pics per post or something else would not allow me to add this one to the post above.
Sorry these are not the greatest pictures but I had my phone handy. (110)

Michael,
Great pics... they are a great idea to put that elbow on there. If these new hoses we just put on show any signs of kinking again I'm going to do just like you have in the pics. Our machine is a little funky.... I think the frame is 1993, but went into the factory and back out with all new electronics and rails Nov '06. We love the tool changer on the back, and use just about every tool back there. The Thermwood is replacing an Anderson that had the ATC at the head and drill head.. The more I watch the machine and do timing, I wonder if we shouldn't have gotten the drill head also.
Thanks again for the pics. Also, Carl is sending a solution and hopefully we'll get it all solved.
Thanks,
Fred

Hey Fred,
Just so you know, I did not change the fittings on the vac line that you see. That is the way they came direct from Thermwood. I hope this helps solve your issue.
