Why cannot I build walls?

Post by Gene Davis »

I am new with this software, and have been pretty successful building cabinets, but the wall building part in Layout is kicking my butt!

What's wrong with me?

I'm a whiz with Google Sketchup, and can very quickly draw the arrangement, which I have attached here.

I have used HELP and eCabsMadeEasy, and cannot fathom the depths of this not-very-intuitive wall building routine.

Can someone please walk me through the keystrokes?

Gene,

The wall section is in reality very simple. First of all you need to make sure the wall height (in the wall editor) is set to the appropriate height. Close to the bottom left. Then click on the second button (which looks like a line) to the right of the arrow near the top. Then, somewhere in the space click and drag the line in the direction you want . Now click again. Notice the number for the dimension of the wall at the left is automatically highlighted, DON'T do anything except type the numeric value you want the wall to be and press enter.
There is also a numeric entry for the angle snap that i find useful for designing rooms with angle walls. The angle I use is 15 deg. With the snap angle on (F6) this allows the angle to snap to a 45, and 90 degree angle easily in 15 degree increments.
Once you place a line the proper length click on the end of the wall to continue building. The arrow should be to the inside of the room. If this is not the case with any wall simply highlight the wall, right click and choose \"reverse build direction\"

When you are in the wall editor, make sure when you select the line tool that it becomes highlighted. Also check your snaps - I find \"snap to grid\" and/or \"snap to object\" helps to insure that my walls are continuous After that it works about as easy as Sketchup.
