Profile Modeler and bit selection

Post by FredHirsch »

Having problems with the profile modeler and bit selection. I have a door w/ profile that is modeled using an ecabs MDF profile (bit). Everything loads properly in pm. As an experiment I put a 1/2in endmill and 1/4in ball in my pm tool group. It picks the 1/2in to do most of the machining then selects the ball to do the flat portion that really doesn't need any more milling after the 1/2in, while not even touching the rounded portion that it would do great with.. My stepover is at 12% of the bit width for both bits. I have the latest pm. If I just put the 1/4in ball in the tool group it machines the door but then I loose some of the speed gains and some of the sharp corners (vertical) that are in the profile. I've double checked and all the bits seem to be setup correctly in pm. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Fred

PS not sure if this is a ecab issue or pm issue so put it in this section of the board.

Fred,
You may try using the 1/4\" ball nose tool to model out the profile, then use an 1/8\" or 3/16\" EM to clean up the rounded corners. I am unsure of why the ball nose is doing what it is doing, without seeing the part. I will email you a list of files I will need from you.
