I am making a fluted post. I am able to flute the front and back of the post, but every time I go to the part editor it won't let me choose the left or right sides to flute. I choose the left or right side, but when I go into the editor it changes to the front view with the front selected. I have tried this several times with the same result.
Part Editor will not let you flute the sides. You will have to make two, turn one 90 degrees and put together as an assembly. Another way to do it would be to use a frameless upper cabinet( 6w x 6h x 36 d ) for a 6x6x36 post. Then you CAN flute all sides AND be able to rotate as one unit when placing. Hope this helps.

Sure it will...you just have to think a little differently.
Follow the same procedures described by Mike Seisser in this thread about Stopped Flutes but leave out the angled paths that step the flutes in and out.
Notice that Mike creates a tool path on the side of the part then uses different plunge depths for each flute. Note also that the tool itself is "sideways" or horizontally oriented.
If you follow Mike's directions exactly as posted you will get a good understanding of how to place a profile on any side of a part; left, right, front, back, top or bottom. It just requires a little thought beyond the normal front and back views. In essence you are bringing the tool to the part from the side you want to profile rather than turning the part so you can see what you are profiling.
ok...I tried using a frameless cabinet as the post, but now it makes flutes on the inside. it looks like it is making them on the outside until you exit the part editor, then they appear on the inside. Am I creative or what.
Does anyone know why it would do this?

Here is a rough example of a 6x6x36 column fluted on all four sides. I used a single tool, a 3/16" radius circle centered at 0,0.
I placed a line on the left and right sides of the part that extended 1" past the top and bottom and five lines on the face spaced at 1", 2", 3", 4" and 5".
In Profile Mode I selected the left line and set the plunge depth to -1". I repeated this using plunge depths of -2", -3", -4" and -5". Then I repeated the process for the right side.
Next I selected a line on the face and set the plunge depth to -6". I repeated this for each line on the face. This placed flutes across the back of the part.
Finally I selected a line on the face and left the plunge depth at 0, again repeating this for each line to place flutes across the face of the part.
Note that this particular method works only when the tool is a circle centered at 0,0.
