This is a little shoe bench in the Mission Style that I did this morning.

Very nice! How much of that is made with display cubes or boards? Also what did you use for the finished color?

Greg,

It is all Display Boards so that I get a material count. I make the parts long to accommodate the mortise and tenon joinery.

I used a couple of textures for contrast. The seat and back are Formica 1 353-58 English oak and the rest is an imported image and I don't know what it is.

I will probably just use a piano hinge as she is going to put a cushion in the center. I thought about some of the lift mechanisms but they take up too much room in the box.

I was surprised, this only took about 1 1/2 hours at most. This is part of a kitchen that is sitting in my shop ready to be installed. The customer has some idea of what she wants for this piece but hasn't been able to get it across. This will be the third bench I have designed for her. I sent pictures of around thirty benches from the internet to her and she didn't like any of them, ie "Too plain looking, or too fancy".

How many hinges do you need?
Use our Torsion Calculator or the formula below to help determine your optimal configuration.
(lid depth (Fig. 1) x lid weight in pounds) ÷ 2 = Inch-lbs. of support

For best results, choose a combination of hinges that provides as close to your lid's required support as possible (eg. if the formula returned 125 you would use two 60 in-lb. hinges). Hinges are available in 30, 40, and 60 in-lb. ratings.
Note: If three or more hinges are required, the support-capacity of the outside hinges must be the same. Also, the hinge configuration should be symmetrical.

Installation instructions

Attach hinge to lid with 3/4" screws (included). For the lid to be flush with the back of the box, the top of the hinge should be 1- 9/16" from the back edge of the lid. To create an overlay, increase the 1-9/16" dimension by the desired amount of overhang.
Note: Our Lid-Stay Torsion Hinge JIG IT (23625) lets you to attach the hinge to the lid in seconds, and requires no measuring. Works great for both flush and overlay applications. Fig. 2.

With all hinges attached to the lid, position the lid on the back of the box. Complete the installation using 1" and 3/4" screws as shown in the illustration. Fig. 3.
