Doors, Drawer Fronts and Drawer Boxes List

Post by Joe Dusel »

It sure would be nice if we had a selection similar to the Cutlist that would be specific for doors, drawer fronts and drawer boxes. I know we can manipulate the data in Excel, but this can be painful since it involves removing unneeded columns, removing units, removing (Min Inc xxx), converting text to numbers and finally sorting. If you change anything your macro needs tweaking.

Here's what I would like to see. Typically when I am placing an order for doors and drawer fronts I need the Quantity, Width and Height. The units of measurement (inches or mm) should really be just mentioned once in the header along with the style and species as well as any other information applying to the entire job.

For drawer boxes I would like the general specs in the header, but we don't need the units on each line, and we don't need to see (Min Inc xx) for Width, Height and Depth fields. It would also be nice to have these sorted into Quantity, Width, Height and Depth.

In the interim, would it be possible to setup the Cutlist to just have the units placed in the headers such as Height (mm), Width (mm) and Depth (mm)?

Thanks!

Joe

Joe,
I recorded a macro to make all the changes I want to my cut list. I export the list then hit ctr+s and it is done.
I have attached a .pdf of what I end up with to order doors.

Taking time to record the macro has really made life easier.

Thanks for the response Kerry. I also have macros, but it seems that there is always something or other that pops up that requires the macros to need tweaking. I just think it would be nice if the software would automatically spit out a list of doors, drawer fronts and drawer boxes that were in what I consider to be a bit more user friendly format. Kind of like what you show in your PDF except that the items that are the same are tallied with a quantity.

Take care,

Joe

Hey guys I've just started playing around with excell.I don't even know what a macro is let alone write one  But I'd really like to learn, take it that instructions for doing this would be in exel help or somewhere???? A simplification of cut lists would really help my guys on the floor. We haven't got a thermwood YET so grouping parts together like cabinet ends etc makes the precutters job a lot easier. They actually hate it when I give them the ecabs cut list as the parts are all over the place.Kerry ,I think you or Dan(or anyone else that knows this programme back to front) should consider a holiday down under when its your winter, I'd be glad to show you the sites in return for some tuition!Check out Mount Maunganui or Tauranga on the webb. :joker:

You foot the bill and I'll come down about December and stay until about March or so. :joker:

Simply put, a macro is a series of steps taken in a worksheet that can be replayed. You can use the macro recorder in Excel or you can write your own from scratch using VBA.

Google "Excel macro tutorial" and you can find lots of examples.

Since we are on this topic, does anyone have the formula to tally the part amounts in Excel? I would like to see the cut-list read: 64 Drawer Side @ 5.875X22 instead of: 1 Drawer Side @ 5.875X22,1 Drawer Side @ 5.875X22,1 Drawer Side @ 5.875X22,1 Drawer Side @ 5.875X22,1 Drawer Side @ 5.875X22,1 Drawer Side @ 5.875X22,1 Drawer Side @ 5.875X22,1 Drawer Side @ 5.875X22,1 Drawer Side @ 5.875X22,1 Drawer Side @ 5.875X22,1 Drawer Side @ 5.875X22,1 Drawer Side @ 5.875X22,1 Drawer Side @ 5.875X22,1 Drawer Side @ 5.875X22,1 Drawer Side @ 5.875X22,1 Drawer Side @ 5.875X22,1 Drawer Side @ 5.875X22,1 Drawer Side @ 5.875X22,1 Drawer Side @ 5.875X22,1 Drawer Side @ 5.875X22,1 Drawer Side @ 5.875X22,1 Drawer Side @ 5.875X22,1 Drawer Side @ 5.875X22,1 Drawer Side @ 5.875X22,1 Drawer Side @ 5.875X22,1 Drawer Side @ 5.875X22,1 Drawer Side @ 5.875X22,.......................... :|

Rick, that's exactly the point I'm trying to make as well.

Joe,

You are right about always finding something that needs to be tweaked with the macros but at least with the macros in Excel the cutlist is readable.

The format of the eCabinets cutlist has always been less than desirable, I too hope there can be improvements. The only problem I see is the fact that every user will want something different for the output.

I would like to have something like a report center where you can print out just the dimensions for the doors, drawer fronts and drawer boxes for outsourcing or be able to get a cutlist for just those items without having to change your doors from purchase to alternate source or build in house.

I also agree that same sized doors etc. should be tallied.

I am anxious to see the direction eCabinets will be heading with the release of version six. I have great expectations.

Al,

Just curious how many more videos are you talking about? There are now over a weeks worth of training online.

I have an additional comment on this thread about eCabinets creating reports.

I visit the forums for a couple of other cabinet software packages. They are having this same discussion about how to get customized reports. Their only option is to contact there customer support and have a custom report written by the software company. We don't want this to be the case with eCabinets. With the ability to export to excel, any of us can create custom reports. It may take some work on our part but we can get it done. I am afraid that no matter how eCabinets does the reports, some of us will always need something different. Exporting to excel seems to be the best way to get that.

Something to think about.

Dan,

Crystal Reports would be great but the only benefit I see of excel is the fact that most people have it and if they don't they can use Open Office.

True. Plus, Excel is a bit more intuitive than Crystal Reports.
